I think non-ZIP formats are abusing the unskilled enough already that we don't need to make them deal with multi-part archives on top of that.

my kindle pw just updated, and I tried updating the python and screensaver files in the root directory separately but it wouldn't show "update your kindle". Am I doing something wrong? It's been a couple months since I last did this so I'm a bit rusty.

Make sure your jailbreak is up to date, apply the hotfix if necessary (in the Jailbreak thread), then install KUAL and the MobileRead Package Installer (MrPI).

All hacks now require this method -- things changed.

God I feel like such a failure, I can't even update the jailbreak. Should I just try uninstalling and reinstalling?

Update: before posting this, I actually tried uninstalling and GUESS WHAT it didn't work. I tried updating and uninstalling and just unzipping the jailbreak zip in the root folder and nothing. OTL

When did you jailbreak? If you didn't have the latest jailbreak, I would use the hotfix.

Again -- Amazon changed everything, you cannot install things by putting them in the root and using Update Your Kindle, anymore.

looking at my files I guess my most recent jailbreak was last year - I try to keep my kindle offline as much as possible, but last night I left it on.

I am currently on 5.6.2.1 My jailbreak and tweaks are all working well. Can I upgrade to 5.6.5, reinstall my tweaks via MR packages and be OK? Thanks in advance.

Re-install at least the jailbreak from NiLuJe's snapshot thread before upgrading.

You can't really tell about the jailbreak that is installed, since none of its self-protection features are used or tested by normal operation.

@samhfoley: Technically, the bridge, but, yes. It's basically spelled out in the JB's thread (the jb update instructions of the first post, to be exact).

Sorry, I'm reading and rereading the thread and I see a lot of information about making sure your jailbreak is up to date, but nothing that really tells me how to go about that. I have tried unpacking the JB into the root drive. Also tried MR Installer, neither worked.
