Yes, but if people are asking if this latest basic Kindle has Carta, then presumably that means it's always been Pearl up until this point? And the claim of "increased contrast" has been made a few times in the history of that product line. So if it's been made again this time, that doesn't necessarily mean there's been a switch to Carta.

The assumption is that they switched to a Carta screen, partially based on statements in the press release about "updated electronic ink technology for better contrast".

The controller is certainly the updated one found on the Oasis 2 & PW4, but I can't tell you what the screen substrate (as in, generation. No plastic. Let's not start this rumor again.) actually is without an actual device on hand
