Follow-up question. Do you plan on supporting the epub3 format in the future through your online reader?

Thanks Seabound! I should probably put the file size limit on the site somewhere.
And yeah, I hope it succeeds and lasts too - so far so good, there's 848 users registered in the last 10 days or so since I went open beta ![]() I kinda inadvertently allowed sharing for a couple days immediately after launched (the 'detect if a book is public domain' code wasn't working yet). It went poorly (although the press was nice ![]() Right now it'll detect copyright status and set books to public or private automatically - 'public' books can be browsed by anyone on the site. I've got a few more ideas on how to improve this, but nothing implemented yet. EDIT: hmm, epub3 does more than I thought it did. I'll make a note to look into it. Nah mate, Kindles don't use ePub at all. So any Kindle uploads would be mobi files, and adding two conversion steps to the mobi file would not be desirable.

It's a bit of a mess, I admit. Why can't everyone just agree on one format? ![]() |

I will admit I am a bit confused here.. I went and took a look at your site. Under popular "PUBLIC" books I found (for instance) "Sh*t My Dad Says" ISBN 9780061992704. I was able to add this to MY shelf and then download this book.
The book has the imprint in it of HarperCollins e-Books. Are you SURE this is public domain? |

![]() I'll have a look today and see why it's being set incorrectly. It was probably erroneously found as free somewhere, or there's a free product with the same name or something. Aside from anything else, if the book is anywhere as bad as the tv pilot, it's probably better it not be distributed... ![]() |

Several things:
1.) How can I see, if I inadvertently made an ebook public? I work on a lot of my books, but I never checked, if it is set to copyrighted or not, as it does not matter on my reader. You should perhaps give people the following possibility: If it is copyrighted it is not shared. If it is not copyrighted the user can deny sharing. 2.) Reading online - The back to codexcloud link can hang in the text of the book - I hate searching for where/how to turn a page, there is no real hint 3.) Now I have to figure out, if I can access my books from the PRS-T1 |

I think you have a good idea here but as I tried to explain before converting ebooks back and forth will cause some things in the books to be lost. Converting Mobi to Epub and then back to Mobi is going to cause errors. Those of us using Mobi format will enjoy out books much more without the errors of conversion. When you upload a Mobi it should be left in Mobi format.

Hello,
About CodexCloud - It is a very good idea. But as a Kindle-blogger and Kindle specialist I could not agree with your opinion and method about converting everything to epub. Millions of readers using Amazon PRC/MOBI and they not using epub, because of Kindle (which is not epub-based now and possibly later). If I copy my books to cloud, is it for backup and easy access, not for converting and changing/loosing quality because of conversion. So if I could suggest something - an option for users convert/not convert. Without it you could lost a lots of potencial users:-( |

The service is very interesting but a few questions before I give it a try.
I have a HUGE library of dead-tree books and admittedly some of the e-copies of those books I have downloaded from the web. I have scanned many books opf my books (sizes are >25mb and service limits such books). - So how the service treats the books those I have downloaded from the internet? - Will the library accept my >25mb scanned book and convert to any other format smaller than this size? - I do not want to share any of my books, is that possible? - Stanza seems to be dead on iPad (at least doesn't work in my hands). I would like to use Bluebird reader, can I use this service to open books using bluebird reader. (Apologies if any questions sound stupid but they are genuine.) |
