My Forma just updated to 4.23.15548. I used the automated Mac script, which completed successfully. The new firmware apparently introduced a bottom menu bar instead of the old hamburger menu. In there it now shows NickelMenu which gives me the option to launch both KOReader and Plato. Choosing Plato just reboots Nickel, while KOReader gives me several "Don't Panic" messages with a nice picture of of a bomb. It shows 4 of these screens before rebooting into Nickel. Launching Plato or KOReader from "My Books" does not change this.
Anyone else have this problem? |

@TheDoctor40:
An actual look at KOReader's crash.log would be helpful, but it simply sounds like your internal storage is corrupted (or got corrupted during the update/reinstall). Was it always ejected properly, or did someone unplug it like a savage recently? Do a filesystem check (then a database check in Calibre+Kobo Utilities for good measure), and then reinstall the latest OCP, making sure you *do* eject it properly this time ![]() |

Why doesn't the install script download? I have to click "Save Page As."

@Elektron: Assuming you meant the PowerShell script.
Because of mime-type associations. It's technically a human-readable text file, so most browsers default to displaying it (e.g., like an image file, or a plain text file). In fact, GitHub does serve it as plaintext: Code:

@NiLuJe
I did the filesystem and database checks, they both returned no errors. I then just to be safe redownloaded the zip and install script instead of using the original downloads I used. Now Koreader and Plato work fine again. Now that I think about it, initially the installation failed, then the newest version of Nickel installed itself and when I then re-did the script the errors started. But thankfully it now works again! I especially like the new NickelMenu. That way the launchers are easier to find because when I used Nickel for a while the launcher would get buried under my newly added books! |

The exact same thing happened to me a few months ago. The only difference is, it was caused by me tryin to enable the landscape hack on my H2O2 ;P. Also, it made a bunch of books appear in my books.

I had the same problem, by mistake I signed with the Aura One out of my Kobo account, then I had to log in again, Nickel automatically updated, catalogued again all my books even though they are in the hidden *.folder, about 10% of my books got deleted in the process (edit: I have backups), and only after several crashes did I manage to re-install the one-click install package. I now have several items on my home screen I can't get rid of (parental controls are activated), I can only power off the device through the koreader, and every new book is being archived by Nickel. (I did run the ps1-power shell script)

I'm fairly certain that with P controls on, you can remove books. As to that problem, backup your sideloaded books and do a hard reset, that fixed it for me. EDIT: WAIT! You have to prevent nickel from scanning hidden folders, I forgot. That should solve your problem. Don't reseet, but do run the script.

I hate Windows's crappy USB stack with a fiery passion.
The script already takes care of preventing the scan of hidden folders. But if people keep doing seven billion things at the same time, or unplugging stuff when they really shouldn't, stuff is going to go awry, badly. Golden rule: don't ever unplug your device until Nickel's actually resumed. Eject. Eject. Eject. On Windows, do so *at minimum* via the USB safe unplug thingy in the status bar, or, better, via the real Eject available in the contextual menu when right-clicking on the the volume in Explorer. (Why should I bother, you ask? Because the first one doesn't actually eject, it does... weird and fakey and messy Windows stuff. The second one, on the other hand, does a real eject, and Nickel will detect it, much like a Calibre eject). Last edited by NiLuJe; 09-19-2020 at 10:33 AM. |

I seriously messed up my Aura One, couldn't get any method to launch the koreader, finally I make a factory reset and redid a clean install of the one-click package with the ps1 script which worked - a hint for all newbies like myself. (What I found really weird, although I was offline all the time, during one process all my books got deleted, except the djvu's)

Hello! Thanks for your awesome instructions and attempting to make this idiot-proof for all of us. I am trying to install Koreader on my Kobo Libra H20 from my MacBook. I download the Koreader zip and the macOS install zip from your post. I moved the install zip into the unzipped Koreader folder (on the Kobo) and tried to run the process, but I get this message:
"Can't find a .kobo directory, /Volumes/KOBOeReader doesn't appear to point to a Kobo eReader... Is one actually mounted?" I don't do a lot of installing things myself so I'm a little confused. Any help you can offer? Thanks! |

Thanks! I just followed everything step by step in the video and still got the same message that it can't find the .kobo directory. My Libra is plugged in and showing up on my desktop and everything.
