Hello
I'm getting an error 503 server error when try to update a story that I have in my browser cache. I have configured fanfiction to update via cache, so I'm confused as to why FFF is trying to hit the web server at all. I also tried updating without the checkboxes to update metadata, just get the new chapter but I got the same error below. -------------------------------- Status Title Author Comment URL Error The Defensive Space Force Ship Requirement tkepner HTTP Error in FFF '503 Server Error: Service Temporarily Unavailable for url: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1400366...ement'(503) https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1400366...ip-Requirement -------------------------------- I'm seeing this on one or two other stories from FF.net, but not on all stories from FF.net. This story, https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14093457/1/Titanomachy, for example updated just fine from cache. I'd appreciate some help on understanding what is happening with this and why some stories are behaving differently. Thank you, |

If you only want to use browser cache, have you also set use_browser_cache_only:true? After that, there's this FAQ: I've followed all the instructions in Browser Cache Feature and it isn't working / I'm getting errors--help? |

That seemed to have resolved it. I did not know about the _only feature. Thank you for pointing me there. |

I updated the limit from 4 hours to 24, no change restarted chrome, made sure no left over processes double checked cache folder none of that worked. switched browser to firefox, worked fine first time. If I were Italian, my hands would be in the air in exasperation. I'll keep an eye out and see if this starts happening to more stories in my browser config. One thing I did not try was completely clearing my chrome history, might do that next time. Maybe FFF is finding more than one copy? |

Is it possible "Force Author into Author Sort" isn't working?
I have that box checked in FanFicFare configuration (in the standard columns tab) for all my libraries and it doesn't seem to be working. Unless I've misunderstood how it works. Is there more than needs to be done than checking the box? Because when I select "Manage Authors" (via the Tag Browser or wherever) and look at author names, any name with the format of "Firstname Lastname" shows up in the "Author Sort" column as "Lastname, Firstname" even though I have "Force Author Into Author Sort" selected. My understanding was that if I have the box checked, authors would stay "Firstname Lastname" in author sort as well as Author. (I'm using the latest releases of calibre and FanFicFare, not currently using a test version.) |

dailyalice - I just tested and it works as intended--the Author Sort column is set to the same value as Author. It's visible in Calibre's Edit Metadata dialog for the book.
However, when you open Calibre's Manage Authors, apparently it applies it's usual author name swapping to all Author values and ignores existing Author Sort values. You'll have to take that up with Kovid. |

Could the automatic sorting be a setting somewhere? It doesn't happen to me-- I opened the Manage Authors dialog, then ran Quality Check > Check Metadata > Author Sort. I got a few books with authors that I haven't fixed yet (red outline around 'author sort').

![]() When I changed the Author sort field for a unique author to something different (ie, not "LN, FN"), the 'Author sort' box in Manage Authors dialog still showed 'invert' applied to Author, not the contents of Author sort for that book. I didn't try changing anything using Manage Authors--that wasn't the question. |

I just checked on a work and the sort name is correct (or as I expected) in Edit Metadata. And if I sort by an author column in column view (or book list or whatever you call it), they're in the place I'd like them to be. (Sorted First Name Last Name.) But author names in the tag browser are sorted by Last Name, First Name. I guess that's where I got confused, I'd been looking for a specific author via the tag browser and they weren't where I expected them to be. I guess so long as I know about this quirk it's fine, though I might decide to not force author into author sort if I want the same behavior everywhere. Will ponder. Also will want to make this clear in my guide. |

Question: Will pretty much any setting work under an individual story URL section? I was thinking mainly of custom_columns_settings this time. (I suppose ones specific to certain websites might be a bit pointless or not work as expected.)
EDIT: Also, while looking for something in defaults.ini, I noticed that 'remove_class_chapter' was red text. Is this intentional or does it mean there was an error? Code:
## Some tags, notable chapter div tags from Base eFiction, have ## class='chapter', which causes calibre convert to identify it as a ## chapter and 'pagebreak' at that point, aka split the file, which ## adds unexpected pagebreaks and breaks FFF update if an epub to epub ## conversion is done. Remove class='chapter' from all tags by ## default. Also affects previously downloaded chapters on epub ## update. remove_class_chapter:true Last edited by ownedbycats; 11-05-2022 at 05:25 AM. |

How would I copy an AO3 collection to series? (Preferably any actual series would override it.)
Code:
[defaults] # 'add_to_' concats on to existing param, thus the leading comma add_to_extra_valid_entries:,oneshot,tagscategory,collseries, [archiveofourown.org] ## Copy collections to series include_in_collseries:collections custom_columns_settings: collseries=>series EDIT: Also, the AO3 adapter doesn't collect the collection URL (e.g. like this). Is this intended? Last edited by ownedbycats; 11-06-2022 at 06:45 PM. |

You could experiment with include_in_series:series,collections and 'fixing' it after the fact, but I do not recommend it. Quote:
