Quick question: For AO3, is it possible for there to be a delay between the story updating on site and FFF being able to fetch the changes?

I recently updated the summary of one of my own AO3 fics. Immediately after updating and seeing the changes live on site I queued up an overwrite-always (also had some typo fixes). It downloaded but had the old summary. A few minutes later I tried again and it downloaded with the new summary.

Just trying to figure out what happened. Doubt it's a normal situation to update a fic some 60 seconds after the changes go live, so should I wait a few minutes in the future?

I've never seen that behavior, but it's certainly possible in theory--especially if you've seen it happen.

I can think of several scenarios, but I'm just guessing.

• The AO3 site may have a cluster of web servers that don't all get updates at exactly the same time (a less common problem these days, I believe).
• AO3 may serve logged in users more recent data, or just from different servers on a different schedule as above.
• AO3 may update data as seen from author page vs story /navigate page at slightly different times.

If you can prove that the metadata from a different page than the story /navigate page is reliably newer, I might change the adapter to use that instead.

But there's no point (IMO) if the metadata is updated (on a different page) before the chapter list.

I've just started using Calibre, and I'm using the addition Fanficfare. I've so far downloaded nearly twenty web novels from Royal Road, but when I tried to download Deathworlders (by Philip R. Johnson, or Hambone HFY) it wouldn't recognize the URL. I tried several times with different URL's (the one from the table of contents, the one from a chapter with the chapter part removed and again without it removed). Does anybody know how to go about downloading Deathworlders?

Rule one of asking for help with FFF: Always include the story URL(s) that you are having problems with. And the error message if you get one.

I've added a few fanfiction ebooks to my library but before I could click on yes to updating library with the new downloads, my laptop froze and I had to restart. When I opened calibre again, the DL'd stories weren't in the library and they weren't in the 'jobs running' list. Is there a way to find these again or do I need to go back and re-download them again?

There's a chance the ePubs might be still in your system's temp folder, but it's not likely. Otherwise you'll need to re-download.

For the record, such temp files are named (on windows) thusly:

C:\Users\youruser\AppData\Local\Temp\calibre_zhsfz1zd\fanficfare_5w1p2yk3\Story Title-Author Name-sa_vczn4.epub

Where the random looking parts (zhsfz1zd, 5w1p2yk3, sa_vczn4) will be different for every run of calibre, invocation of FFF and downloaded story respectively.

FFF deletes the fanficfare_5w1p2yk3 dir when it finishes, and Calibre deletes the calibre_zhsfz1zd on quit. On crash, they may still be there.

I've noticed that RoyalRoad has statuses of 'Dropped' and 'Stub' that are not picked up and result in a blank status for the book. Is there a reason you skipped those? If not, could you add them at some point? Thanks!

I made a mistake in the update comment, it was for Stub, we already had Hiatus.

I was unaware of Dropped; my admittedly cursory initial search didn't find a list of status states. Found one in advance search finally; looks like adding Dropped should cover all of them.

I don't use that feature and it's been a while, so I can't promise to remember exactly.

I believe it's done before replace_metadata on ships.

But replace_metadata lines for ships_CHARS are applied to the individual names before they are sorted.

Then replace_metadata lines for ships are applied.

As I recall, the intention was to allow for normalizing names in ships and the order before giving a chance to also operate on the now-normalized ships.
