This page is a bit old, but it looks like a decent step-by-step on creating a custom column.

For FFF saved metadata, you want Column Type long text.

Set the "Interpret as" to HTML if you want it to be easily readable, but don't try to edit what FFF puts in that column then.

So I use FFF to snag updates from AO3 on a daily basis. I filter my Calibre library to only display items that are "In-Progress" (that's the AO3 tag) and then I highlight the first 40 or so, click the FFF button in the bar, and let it go to work. If I was to have it scan all my I-P fics, it'd take about an hour (there are about 500 or so I'm still tracking for updates), but I do it in chunks else AO3 burps and I get "Too Many Requests" errors.

I get the email update messages in my mail, too, but I just use the procedure I posted to get the updates.

It also really helps to have one library that is JUST for fanfic, and another (or more) for the rest of your materials. I've broken my collection into several: magazines, non-fic, cooking, crafts, etc.

I've been using FanFicFare / Calibre successfully on Windows 7 Ultimate (service pack 1) for years. Just in the last couple of days, I've had a problem. When I try to download anything from archiveofourown.org, I get an error and under Comments it says:

<urlopen error [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed (_ssl.c:727)>

Help! :-)

Thanks. I tried that. I tried to open the site in IE as suggested, but it says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". So I tried all the things it suggested, but they didn't work.

The website opens fine in FireFox. In Chrome I get an error saying it is not secure, but I can open it anyway.

To the best of my knowledge, Calibre, and therefore FanFicFare, use at least part of the Windows OS SSL support. That's why the cert update via Internet Explorer work-around works.

So your problem almost certain comes AO3 requiring newer SSL(TLS) versions instead of older versions with known issues and Windows7 isn't getting those updates anymore.

You can try setting use_ssl_unverified_context:true personal.ini, but I don't guarantee it will work. That code was for an SSL problem on a different site 5 years ago.

And if you do use that setting, you will be compromising your SSL security in Calibre to some degree. It's complicated to predict exactly how much.

I assume you're talking about the 'Proceed with updating your library' dialog.

That is the mechanism that Calibre uses to make sure that different plugins and Edit Metadata etc never conflict updating the library database.

There an FAQ and if you search for 'proceed' in this thread you'll find past discussions.

Not sure if this is the place for the question since it isn't really a technical issue with FFF, but I have a question I'm hoping I can get an answer to since I couldn't find it in the FAQ or anything.

I know how to download single chapters of a fic from forums, but is there a way to do it from fanfiction.net? It isn't something I normally do, but I kind of wanted to give a fic from Rorschach Blot's Odd Ideas 'story' it's own epub. I THOUGHT it showed how to do this somewhere easily accessible, but that could have been years ago and I can't remember if there is a way to do it or not... anyone know?

Ya, I was hoping to avoid having to do that... I think the Odd Ideas fic is like 200 chapters at this point...

Edit: I thought there was just something you could do after the URL... like put the chapter number in brackets or something, but I'm not sure and even if I was I don't know what kind of brackets, etc.

Correct. You can do one chapter or a range of chapters that way. And you don't need the space. These will all work for different ranges:

Note that it can't do non-consecutive chapters and that ',' is identical to '-' for chapter ranges for historical reasons.
