Dear Beowulf,

I've used Bookit extensively over the past few days and here are some thoughts on how to make it an even greater tool than it already is:

- add a conversion status monitor and/or a completion message
I mostly convert news articles from the web or other stuff that I'd like to read for information purposes. Read-and-delete kind of things. So syncing the output folder to an SD card (using ChronoSync) is more practical than adding everything to Calibre and then saving it to disc (since Calibre doesn't sync with HanlinV3 running OI - and even if it would, USB 1.1 would make it too painfully slow). Only problem is, there is no way of knowing if a conversion is completed successfully, now that calibre won't pop up after the file has been added. (Sometimes there are problems an no file or an invalid file is created. Seemed to happen recently when I started two conversion processes in rapid succession.)

- more case-to-case options for conversion
there might be occasions, where I might want to still add to add a newly created ebook to Calibre. I might need to adjust the spidering settings. Might want to change the output directory. Right now, all of this can only be done by changing the default preferences.

- better handling of pictures
as said, most of the pictures and graphics somehow won't make it into the ebooks created with Bookit. Don't know why. Maybe a problem with Calibre itself rather than your plugin?

Can't think of anything else at this moment. An indication of how good Bookit has bekome in its latest versions.

Beowulf, I'm certain it's something I'm doing wrong, but I'm not having success yet with the plugin under Mac using Firefox 3.5b4. Paths seem correct, but even there I could be wrong. The log shows activity and some errors, but no file appears in Calibre. I do have the latest download of Calibre.

Hmm, it looks like it's downloading the files but not converting them. Probably there's an exception being thrown somewhere. I have some logging code written, but it crashes my mac. I'll try to get that working and get a build out so we can see what's going on.

I have tried the new versions but i still cannot get anything to show up either in the output folder or in calibre. The log also comes out completely blank. I have also tried to install bookit in another system (calibre 0.60b8, winxp) and i have had the same results.

Edit: after some waiting, i have seen a zero byte sized file briefly show up in the output folder and then in calibre(which was launched by bookit as it was closed at the time).

Edit2: after 20minutes firefox crashed, and 3-4 zero length files appeared at the output folder. As calibre was open at the time, no books were added to it.

I also got some 0 byte files trying to convert certain pages. A workarount that will mostly bring good results is selecting everything and putting it into the editor, then convert it. Pictures don't make it into the created ebook (why??) but at least I get something usable.

Maybe Bookit could use the browser cache to create ebooks, not try downloading the files itself? But that again would prevent spidering... (which I haven't figured out yet. How is it supposed to work?)

I'll have a new drop out during lunch that will let you disable threading, that should prevent the crashes. I had hoped to spawn a background thread to do the work, keeping the browser responsive, but then the logging crashes when it tries to call a proxy to the main thread to update the error console. I've seen lots of folks complaining about this in the mozilla dev forums and haven't found a good solution.

It's my long term plan to not use the web2disk tools from calibre but write my own that interfaces with mozilla better, but that's a big project and will be put off until the other import parts are done.

As for images and the editor, best I can tell the problem occurs when the reference to the image file look like "/images/image.png" instead of "http://example.com/images/image.png". When you copy the latter to the editor, the conversion software can still find the image. With the former, the url has been disassociated from the domain so the converted can't find. Custom spidering code may help this, but again, big deal.

v0.5.4

Couple steps to take:

Go to the Advanced section of the Bookit Preferences pane.
set the log level to error
uncheck Enable Threading
Use Tools -> Error Console to bring up the error window and clear the current list
Try to convert and add to a calibre a web page (a simple page is fine) and let me know what errors if any show up in the error console.

I have a nice error logging system in place that seems to crash on Mac only, lovely. I'm still working on idea on how to fix that but can only work on that at home where my Mac is when I can find the time.

I'm just trying out the plugin (v0.5.4), it works sometimes, but I can't get the log to display. I'm trying to get a book for the W3C CSS spec (http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/), which seems to be giving the web2lrf a bit of trouble and takes some time to process.

It's a bit hard to tell when it's converting a web page, so for slow jobs I seem to end up starting it twice. Could the icon change or something like that when it's working on a conversion?

It's a great plugin to have - thanks for all your efforts!

I'm sorry to report that Bookit doesn't seem to work anymore. I only get zero filesize results, no matter if direct convert or the editor is uses.

Here an example. Apparently a very straightforeward site, but can't get it converted.

The link is converted to LRF without any problem for me. I am using
- Bookit 0.5.4
- Calibre 0.5.14
- Firefox 3.5
on Vista.

With bookit, I set the following options:
- max recursion: 0

Edit: I noticed that Bookit will created 0 sized file when the output format is either epub or mobi. I think it only works well with LRF for now.

I've created an epub before, that's odd. I'll double check tonight.

As for folks who can't get it to work under Mac at all, if someone can volunteer some time using a desktop sharing program, maybe something like Mikogo, then I can possibly get useful debug information.

The errors about not getting certain objects such as images or stylesheet appear to be normal when using the calibre command tools. It may just be poorly implemented websites. I get the same errors when running the tools from the command-line, completely outside of the browser.

I need to upgrade to Firefox 3.5 tonight too, I may make that my primary platform although I'm not using any 3.5 specific feature. I'd like to see if it fixes my threading issue.

Read-and-delete kind of things. So syncing the output folder to an SD card (using ChronoSync) is more practical than adding everything to Calibre and then saving it to disc (since Calibre doesn't sync with HanlinV3 running OI - and even if it would, USB 1.1 would make it too painfully slow). Only problem is, there is no way of knowing if a conversion is completed successfully, now that calibre won't pop up after the file has been added. (Sometimes there are problems an no file or an invalid file is created. Seemed to happen recently when I started two conversion processes in rapid succession.) - more case-to-case options for conversion there might be occasions, where I might want to still add to add a newly created ebook to Calibre. I might need to adjust the spidering settings. Might want to change the output directory. Right now, all of this can only be done by changing the default preferences. - better handling of pictures as said, most of the pictures and graphics somehow won't make it into the ebooks created with Bookit. Don't know why. Maybe a problem with Calibre itself rather than your plugin? Can't think of anything else at this moment. An indication of how good Bookit has bekome in its latest versions.
