Cartman, it looks like in 0.6 beta Kovind has changed the executable names of the conversion utilities. Once I get some coffee in me and some household chores done, I'll see how much different they are and make some tweaks.

OK, it doesn't look like it will be a great deal of work to support the beta releases. I'll do some parameter rearranging and put out a new version later today.

It's good timing that I rewrote the plugin, accommodating the new utilities in the old version would have been very difficult.

An update, this should fix the problems running under windows and add basic support for the calibre beta 6

Bookit 0.5.1
  1. Be sure to run the calibre gui at least once first if using the 0.6 betas
  2. check the path to ebook-convert for beta 6
  3. there's a check box on the main preferences pane to enable ebook-convert for beta6

The support for ebook-convert is minimal right now, you can select the output profile, format, title and author and that's about it. When 0.6 is actually released I'll migrate the bookit code to use ebook-convert as the only conversion backend and add more options.

I also just noticed a weird sizing issue with the preferences pane under Mac, I'll look at that when I get a chance.

Next on my plate to add better logging support to detect errors and a progress view.

Exclamation no pix!

Hi Beowulf,

after regularly checking back from time to time to see if new versions of Bookit would fix the not-working-at-all bug that plagued me for quite a long time, the last release finally works again! And it has so many new and neat features! Yay!

Still, there are some little issues, which I'll try to discribe here:

- almost no pictures make it into the ebooks created by Bookit! Please Help!
Example: http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,4303087,00.html, using 'selection to ebook' won't get me the picture. When I try using the editor to create a book, no pictures are included either, even though they do show up in the editor (saving as html won't save the pictures, too). I hope this can be fixed soon, pictures enrich reading!

- calibre doesn't launch after conversion, even though the setting is selected

- when calibre is runnig while a new book is created and added to the database (setting is active in the Bookit preferences), the new books won't show up in the library. This might be a bug in calibre itself, because it tells me the new book is already there when then I try to add it manually. Have to close and relaunch to have it show up in the library.

- recursion settings etc. should be added to the 'create book' dialogue, so they can be changed on a book-to-book basis. Even though I'm actually not sure how recursions work...

Right now, I would like to create an ebook of this site: www.china1900.info
It is pretty straight foreward, doesn't have many external links and includes a lot of pictures. I don't get anything usable with Bookit (max recursions set to 5 and max files set to 100, whatever that means).

- there should be an option like 'add to calibre database and delete file', otherwise there will be lots of duplicate files on the hard drive in no time.

You're doing really great work with Bookit! Keep it up!

Cheers,

jo.

Hi Jo, thanks for the great feedback. I'll look into the bugs you mentioned.

You may want to look at the log, which captures the output of the last conversion. (In the future I hope to keep a list of recent runs and logs). Either cut-n-paste it into a post or let me know if you see any errors.

Question log?

Hi Beowulf,

OK, if I select "show log" from the Bookit menu, I get the following message: "Log path not set"

But the log path can't be set in the preferences, it seems. So what do I do now?

Hmm, that log path should be set when it completes the conversion. My guess is an exception is being thrown that's causing your other problems too. I'm working on a version now that has better logging. Once I get it debugged I'll put it up and see if that will help diagnose your issues.

Jo, I've put up a new version with some rudimentary logging, can you give it a shot and let me know what errors you see?

v0.5.2

  1. Install 0.5.2 and restart firefox
  2. Open up the Tools -> Error Console and clear it out
  3. try to create a book, make sure 'add to calibre' and 'launch calibre' are enabled.

Let me know if you see any errors in the Error Console window. There's probably one from trying to delete the working directory. I've seen that but haven't worked out what the cause is.

Edit to Add: I also add the --duplicates option when adding to the calibredb to force adding a new book even if there is a duplicate author/title in the current db.

Unhappy path problem

Hello Beowulf,

still, a "path not set" message.

BTW, I just found out that I will only get ebooks when "use ebook converter (calibre .6 beta only)" is selected. Won't get anything without that option.

OK, I corrected the link you posted (points to 0.5.1) and got the new version.

I forgot to mention that my Mac's system language is traditional chinese, as is Firefox'.
Don't think there are problems with that, but I guess I should mention it anyway.

The two chinese characters in the post above mean: Error

Cheers,

Cool, that's very helpful. The ebook has been created here /users/jo/desktop/readingfolder/bookit/test.epub but it's failing to launch calibre. I was able to reproduce it on my Mac, I'll see what I can figure out. I know it worked before.

I also added a "delete after adding" option for the next release.

Ok, this should fix a few things on mac

v0.5.3

I added the 'delete after adding to calibre option" and removed logging which seems to crash under Mac but not Windows.

I've changed the way calibre is launched under Mac, this should work now.

If no one comes forward with any killer bugs in the next day or so, I'll update the feed to refer to the last build for automatic updates.

I'm holding off adding many option related features until calibre 0.6 is released, then I'll update focus on using ebook-convert as the primary conversion utility and add options related to it.
