Sorry I haven't gotten back to you, I didn't get an email notification that there were new postings and I haven't had time to keep an eye on the forums.

Those should be the default paths for a Mac Install. Luckily, just last week I bought a Mac. When I get home tonight, I'll write out steps to verify the paths.

A quick news note, this weekend I got the new backend working to manage launching the calibre utilities. It tooks a bit of experimentation to find the right approach but I think I have something that works. It will be few more weeks to get it fleshed out and usable, then I'll post something that folks can try.

Bookit and FireFox 3.1 Beta 2

Beowulf, thanks again for Bookit! I'm trying it in the newest Firefox, Beta 3.1b2 and it looks as though something has changed that is disallowing the plugin.

BTW, Beta 3.1b2 is very cool...it allows mousepad gestures for navigation on Macbooks!

It's probably a version issue, I'll try to do an update later today.

I updated the signatures for 0.4.4 to support 3.1, I don't have 3.1 installed anywhere, can you try installing it?

Printing Option for Editor

Hi Beowulf,

could you make the Editor contents printable?
Would helpt to get good pdfs at least, since ebook creation is still non-functioning for me.

Cheers,

jo.

Thanks beowulf...so far no go. I wonder if it might have to do with updates to Calibre itself...I don't see web2lrf anywhere on my hard drive anymore. Maybe you and Kovid could exchange notes to see if the plugin needs to change some of its default settings?

Can't get it to run at all on a Mac

OK, call me ignorant, but I can't even get the plug-in settings configured. I have corrected the path to Calibre, but I don't even *have* the other two files it mentions (web2lrf or calibredb). I have even looked at the Contents of Calibre.app (since apps are really just folders), and these two files are not embedded inside of Calibre. The instructions don't say to download anything else. When I try to "bookit" a web page, Calibre never launches. Nothing happens. Is there a dummies guide out there somewhere?

i think most of the command line tools will be in your /usr/bin folder as symbolic links to those in the .app bundle in the loaders folder.

The first time you run calibre it should create links to those binaries. I bought a mac for my birthday, let me see...
Code:
$ ls -l /usr/bin/web2lrf
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  60 Feb 15 18:15 /usr/bin/web2lrf -> /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/Resources/loaders/web2lrf
$ ls -l /usr/bin/html2lrf
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  61 Feb 15 18:15 /usr/bin/html2lrf -> /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/Resources/loaders/html2lrf
$ ls -l /usr/bin/calibre
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  60 Feb 15 18:15 /usr/bin/calibre -> /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/Resources/loaders/calibre
$ ls -l /usr/bin/calibredb
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  62 Feb 15 18:15 /usr/bin/calibredb -> /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/Resources/loaders/calibredb
Can you use the terminal app to check if those links are there? I'll do what I can but I'm leaving for India Tuesday. If we can't figure it out before I'll be back after the first week of March and I'll do my best to help you out then.

I had high hopes for adding a large set of features, but time hasn't permitted it. When I get back I'll focus more on adding debugging code and making what already there work better.

FYI, if you want an easy way to check your settings; entery about:config in your address bar and bookit in the filter. That will show you all the bookit perferences. extensions.bookit.calibre, extensions.bookit.calibredb, extensions.bookit.output and extensions.bookit.web2lrf are paths I would check.

Could Bookit Be Used to Create Mobi Files?

Hi Beowulf,

Actually I'm not sure if this would be directed to you or to Kovid, but I'm wondering if there is a capability somewhere in the Calibre installation that Bookit could use to convert html pages to Mobipocket format. After the file is converted, it would need to be dragged manually into the Kindle, but that's not a big deal. The main thing that would need to happen would just be the conversion itself, via the Bookit plugin. With the huge number of people who are Kindling these days, and the growing popularity of Firefox, it'd seem like a match made in Heaven. :-)

Whoops, late again.

Not right now, I'm directly using the web2lrf part of calibre to do the conversion.

I sat down yesterday to review what I want to do given the amount of time I have available, I realized my grand plans are a bit too grand for right now. So I reverted my code back to the last release and am rethinking things a bit.

I've been wanting to add epub support, so I think I'll tackle that first. As a side-effect, it should be easy to add mobi support at the same time. I'm going to spend my lunch hour reviewing the code and trying to think of the best path to take. Instead of rewriting the whole thing at once, do it in small steps that are actually achievable.

I also want to add more useful logging so we can figure why some folks are having issues.

I'll put another message up when I know what I'm doing. :-)

Here's a question for folks, is anyone still using Firefox 2.x? There are several new features in 3.x that would make my life easier, but they don't exist in the old 2.x releases.

Go 3!

Hi Beowulf,

I'm on 3 already and I'll bet most other folks are as well at this point. If not, you can always just make that a requisite. "Requires 3.0 or higher"

Thanks for the pondering on the course of Bookit. I'll be following the progress and crossing my fingers for a mobi-future!

FYI, some Vista 64-bit users may need to update their paths to the calibre components. It may be "C:\Program Files (x86)\calibre\" instead of "C:\Program Files\calibre\".

I'm not sure if I can auto-detect this yet or not.

I'm having the same problems as jotheman and I've triple checked my settings. Could it be a permissions problem?
