I don't know if I'm particularly dumb, but I cannot understand what the button "<>" does, apart from noticing that - whatever it does - it is un-doable.

just curious!

I should toggle between visual editing and raw html. If it doesn't work post your browser and OS version and I'll look into it. There are some issues using the editor module from a plugin, kinda annoying.

It should also show tooltips but doesn't, I'm still trying to figure that out.

Thanks for the update with the icon and I can find 'Selection to ebook' menu much faster.
I will be also looking forward to epub feature.

Great, turns out it was trivial to add.

It's going to take a bit to get epub in, I've got a vision of what I want to do, and I think it will be much nicer in the end, but it will take a few weeks to get there.

Another Great Use for Bookit

You can turn any e-book at the Gutenberg Project into a very nice e-book for the Sony Reader by finding the book you want, choosing the HTML version of it, letting it display completely onscreen in your browser, then running Bookit on it by double-clicking the Bookit icon. Works great...instant e-book!

It looks like they have a consistent header in their text, I'll play around and see if I can parse out the author/title from the document and auto-fill the fields.

If that is its use, I'm very glad - it was what I was waiting for!
Unfortunately it doesnt seem to work, and clicking on it simply cancels out newlines and formatting, e.g. from:

Poll Says Attacks Backfire on McCain
By MICHAEL COOPER and MEGAN THEE

If the election were held today, Barack Obama would have a significant lead over John McCain, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll has found.

(BTW, waiting for the USA to do the right thing! ;-)

I work on Linux Fedora FC8, Firefox v.2.0.0.16 - but I could switch to v.3 for your plugin, I love it!

Thanks, I'll look into. I've also had issues where the editor will be read-only (which isn't very useful!) but haven't been able to track it down.

For the new code I'm working on you'll definitely need 3.0, but it's a few weeks out and I forked the source code so I can do bug fixes and make maintain a 2.0 compatible version.

Multiple Entries into Editor

Hi Beowulf...

One thing I find myself trying to do often is to try and turn one of those broken-up articles into a single document Example would be a news story or review or documentation where they have a bunch of "Next" buttons at the end of each section that takes you to the next hunk of the content. They do that to force you to read ads :-). Anyway...what I was wondering if the editor could become saavy in that area.

The idea would be that you could highlight a section of text, and choose Open Editor, and it would be pasted in. Then you'd go back to the web article, click the "Next" link to take you to the next piece of the article, highlight that section of text, choose Open Editor again, and it'd be pasted beneath the first text in the editor, etc. That way a person could build up the entire article in one piece for export to an ebook!

Just click the print version button in the article, it will open the article as a single page and you can copy paste it in one go

Using the "Print" Option

Yep, great point, Kovid, and that does indeed do the trick for some of them. The problem I run into when using that approach is that a surprising number of web sites either just bring up the printer preferences window rather than displaying the reformatted article, or only display the current page of the article, when you click the Print link.

Not working at all

Hi Beowulf,

I did a complete clean uninstall of Firefox and all Extensions (Addons), because I thought my problems with Bookit might have their origin there.

Now I have the following setup:
Mac OS X 10.5.5
Firefox 3.0.3
Bookit 0.4.4
Calibre 0.4.100

All problems that were there before are still present:
1) Title of page won't automatically be used as book title in the dialogue box
2) Creating an ebook doesn't work. No book is created in the specified folder. If "add to calibre" and/or "launch calibre" is selected in the options, calibre will open after a short while, but no new ebook apears.

Am I the only user seeing these problems?

Jotheman, this may or may not be your issue, but when everything else seems right with my setup and a book won't "create," it has been a problem with the Bookit preferences that relate to path. On my Mac, they are:

Path to weblrf:
/usr/bin/web2lrf

Path to Caibre:
/usr/bin/calibredb

Path to e-books:
/Library/Ebooks/

The latter is one of my own choosing; you just need to be sure that, whatever you specify, is a legitimate path to a folder because I don't think Bookit will create one for you if it doesn't exist.

Hope it helps!

Thanks Dsuden for pointing me to those paths. The problem might be originating there, because those are the default paths. Now that I think of it, my applications aren't stored in the "user/applications"-directory, might this be the problem? How do I get the correct path? I can't just chose the application path by navigating there, I have to give a Unix path, which is different from the paths I see as a normal user...
