I'm reading Six Weeks to Live by Catherine McKenzie. About half way through a good story. It's a mystery/thriller - main character with messy family is dying and has limited time to figure out if she had been deliberately poisoned. First time reading this Canadian writer's works.

A nautical fantasy with inventive people and culture. Both sad and hopeful. Great writing skill that makes this reader pause occasionally to let the MC's thoughts sink in. Unfortunately, I felt there was too much repetition and inactivity for me to enjoy this more. Plus, the ending was not surprising. Rated C [3 stars]. Next, another library book, The Thorn of Dentonhill by Marshall Ryan Maresca. |

I may be a lurker, but that shall change, So, Right now I am reading Otherside Picnic by Iori Miyazawa Reminds me quite a lot of Roadside Picnic, but with a tiny bit less sci-fi More or less, feels like an ideal book for me so far, as the more I read it, the more I love it. |

Ropes in the Attic by Edward J. Flora A debut novel. It was both sloppy and it didn't make sense, especially the ending. The incident that happened at the start of the book is supposed to be a year before most of the book takes place. But later it's referred to as being two years ago and later it was even several years ago. I also felt that most of the book information was held back, that you didn't get the entire picture. It would have been better with that information; more history about the house and it's previous inhabitants. I only finished it because it was a short book. |

In the Market for Murder by T. E. Kinsey. This was a fun read. A Column of Fire by Ken Follet. Book number 3 in the Kingsbridge series. A good book but not as good as the first two. I wish I could read faster, this book took me 11 days to read. |

As for the audiobook, the narrator was adequate. The women’s voices were a little stagey but fine; the men’s voices were dire at times. I suspect the narration added to my unhappiness, but it also meant I probably didn’t pick up on as many errors as I would have if I’d read it. Are we still friends?

Oh, yes. And we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. Though we agree on the narrator. Adequate, but hardly inspired.

I feel your pain! I read a lot of Regency and Victorian romances, and it seems maybe 1 author in 4 can be bothered attempting to get titles right. It's not even a US vs UK thing, it's just lazy authors versus those who care - one US author provided a very detailed breakdown of the research she'd done in learning how titles worked at the very start of her book. That predisposed me to enjoy the book. Last edited by Uncle Robin; 08-06-2022 at 09:04 PM.

It's small comfort but there it is; British authors are as clueless as Americans when it comes to titles and correct usage. And it's not just that the authors are lazy, although that's certainly part of it; it's that they have been oblivious whenever they've run across it. Or in other words, it's sheer stupidity. Which earns a hard pass from me.
