Thanks to davidfor and BetterRed for this one. No feature changes, just a fix for a bug caused by tab-based indentation instead of space-based indentation in some lines of code.

That’s considerably more granular than I’m really prepared to get with this plugin. I understand you wanting those two fields… but someone else will want others in addition, another person will think series are terrible and want support for his custom columns, and before you know it, someone’s asking for a keep/remove checklist feature.

Best not to start down that road at all.

If you send to device or send to folder, I seem to recall that calibre will add the metadata back in. AFAIR, unless you polish or modify epub, the metadata in the ebook is not modified within calibre's library.

As JSWolf says, use calbre's editor or Sigil to manually remove those lines if you need to get that granular. The other option is to modify the plugin yourself since the majority of the plugins and calibre itself were born from the author's desire for a feature.

I resist removing that one in particular, as Kobo exposes those contents as the book’s Summary. That’s useful information, and in fact I wish calibre had an easy way to apply Smarten Punctuation there.

A suggestion for Modify Epub. When adding a cover to an epub3, add 'properties="svg"' to the titlepage line in content.opf.

Assuming the epub3's cover page html file actually contained an <svg> tag, it would be one less error that epubcheck would report.

  1. It a requirement of the epub3 spec. Epubcheck flags it as an error.
  2. Modify Epub uses an svg wrapper for it's inserted/replaced cover image.
  3. AFAIR, calibre (Polish, Save to, Send to or Modify Epub) will modify the metadata but not the manifest or spine segments of the .opf file internal to the epub. If I edit the epub, all bets are off.

Perhaps I should make it clear that I would like this option when Modify Epub is inserting or replacing a cover and the epub version is 3.

Okay, that’s closer to a decent definition of the issue: it’s not a random request, but a modification to bring existing behavior in line with the spec. That makes a certain amount of sense and takes the issue from “why bother” to “sensible, if plausible.”

Thing is, the possibility of cover image replacement through calibre’s “Edit metadata” dialog still exists, and that’s completely beyond Modify’s control, as are any changes that makes to the ebook. So this patch can’t be a cure-all. We might get lucky enough that calibre won’t bother changing this, but that’s not something we can rely on.

Next up: Can you point me at the specific sections of the EPUB 3 specs (I don’t know whether the requirement has changed in any of the point versions) which discuss this, so I know exactly what is called for and precisely where?
