I don't know which version I had downloaded. But, it is still happening with the version in #750. One thing I did notice was that there were no lines between the body and the first tag. And if I use calibre editors pretty, then it unpretties correctly.

I'll have a play and see what I can see.

EDIT: It looks like the difference in results is due to a different protocol; I just set up an "unpretty, and nothing else" test, and now I see the results you're getting. I'm on the case.

EDIT 2: Aha! Seems your HTML files were using CRLF EOL markers, and an earlier step in my previous process was changing those to plain LF markers. I've added an explicit step to unpretty which replaces CR(LF?) with LF, which appears to fix the issue. The attached version has been updated with this fix, as of 9:20pm EDT.

No change. And they were the pre-unprettied versions. I even downloaded one to them to a different library with the same result.

But, I have found something. This is only happening if I don't have either of the the strip options selected. It only happens if unpretty is the only one of your new options selected.

Why is it you are changing the line endings if they are CRLF? Why not just leave them be?

Because CRLF breaks things, LF doesn't, and the ereader doesn't care.

I think there should be a disclaimer then that if you do use the span removal that you'll need a text editor for Windows such as Notepad++ that understands Linux line ends if you want to edit manually any of the text files.

That version works.

Question: Should unpretty put an empty line between the tags? It doesn't between the body an first tag, but does after that.

Edit: Didn't see the other posts. It's the editor. Notepad just wraps it. Notepad++ and the calibre editor show a line in between. I'm fine with that.

No. If you can't figure out how to handle a UNIX-formatted text file, you shouldn't be manually tinkering with EPUBs at that nuts-and-bolts level anyway. Note that davidfor had little, if any, trouble with that issue.

It does that by design in certain cases, and it removes those empty lines in certain other cases. From memory, headers, paragraphs, and lists get a blank line after them. I wavered a bit on whether to treat DIV the same way, but decided not to, since it's also used in more generic ways. In addition, BR, BODY, DIV, and a few other tags get single line breaks after them.
