You cant use google checkout for Australia. You have to use your credit card thru BH. I have ordered heaps thru BH before but did have to fax a copy of my new credit card. Took them less than an hour to confirm they had my fax.

I have always been impressed with BH. It's my wifes birthday today so i have a hunch it wont make it in time. LOL

B&H credit card

Hi maxk,

you can upload the image of your credit card. You don't have to send it by email.

New member in UK

Hi everyone,

First of all I'd like to thank everyone who has shared valuable information on this forum, as it helped me make a decision about whether to buy the Sony PRS-505 from the US and import it to the UK.

I decided to give it a go, especially as the exchange rate is very favourable at the moment. I managed to pick up a previously owned but unused PRS-505 on eBay for $285 + $25 shipping via USPS Priority Mail International. It was shipped two weeks ago so I'm hoping it will arrive any day now. Even though I didn't ask, the seller was kind enough to mark it as a gift which might help with import duties.

Late edit: just heard that it cleared UK customs yesterday morning. Oooh!

Thanks for spotting the price reduction at B&H, despite the hassle of scanning credit cards I followed along and ordered from them also, it's already shipped

Just to confirm in case others are as paranoid as me - they provide an SSL encrypted page to upload your credit card image in the order confirmation email (before that they provide a link only to a non-SSL page).

Credit Card Images

Hi Maxk,

I just followed the first upload which doesn't seem to be save. I am not an expert in all this safety stuff and just hope that everything runs smoothly. Yes, and they have already shipped mine.
So is there a real danger to transfer the images of my Credit Card?
It seems I am not very prone to these kinds of fears and best-selling conspiracy theories.
I am happily using Google's word-processing in the clouds and Microsoft's drive in the sky.

Hi Friedhelm - the chances are slim of someone stealing your details when the page isn't SSL but you never know, someone could still "hack" their servers and steal that information that way. It's worth investigating SSL (https) alternatives any time you are entering personal information.

PS. by default Google uses an insecure login, you can force it to secure by entering https://docs.google.com/ (note the https part in front, also works for Gmail etc).

Then I tried datavis but they wanted funds transferred by wire.
The same with Bongo.com the forwarding crowd but they also wanted a 3 month contract with them for a PO box
Next I tried B&H but they were out of stock.
So I went onto ebay and found a shop odditycommodities which had 16 in stock at $349 the delivery to Ireland for 1 was $36 but I wanted 2 so it was $50, This is by post so they should bypass customs here
so I ordered them and they are being shipped by post marked as gifts for the grand total of €515 for both ( if the customs dont get me).
I will let you know how it goes.

They arrived today and are waiting to be collected at the post office but I got caught for VAT but it's only €54 for both of them bringing the price to €285 each so still a bargain

B&H PRS-505

Hi maxk, kaboom and who ever might be interested,

I ordered on Friday, 09.11.07 last week with B&H. They shipped it on Monday and I got it here (Germany) today, Wednesday 14.11.07.
I think that is quite amazing. Often enough it takes longer to get something within our borders. Brilliant!
And yes, the contrast is dramatically better than that of my PRS-500 which I am using for about a year now.

Just a couple of Qs:
  • Did the customs require you to pay GST?
  • Where did you order it?
  • Did you use Fedex or Int's post?

If you have any other tips about ordering PRS-505 from Aus, I will be really glad to know them.

Thanks!

Using supplied charger in UK

MY PRS-500 has just arrived here in the UK and I'm delighted with it. I had to pay just over £30 in VAT + handling charges, but it was worth it.

To use the power charger (not the USB cable) in the UK, will a simple adapter work to connect the US 2-pin plug to a UK 3-pin socket, or do I have to use a voltage converter too?

The power adaptor does support 240 volts. So yes, all you need is a simple plug converter.

Mine just arrived (Aus)

I ordered from B&H last weekend, it was shipped on Monday morning 12/11, arrived today Friday 16/11.

No customs or GST were required to be paid, used default shipping method of UPS.
