Hi everyone!

I come from Florence, Italy, and in few days I'll be a new (and I hope happy) owner of a Sony PRS-500 Reader.

I bought it on eBay, and I paid it 295$ (214.7€) shipping costs included.

JSWolf don't worry: he will give the receipt for the (I hope unnecessary) warranty!

See (read?) you soon!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sony Reader ownership. The receipt won't matter unless you have someone in the US to send it to to then send it in for warranty repair should it ever need to go in.

Hello everybody...

I'm from Argentina. I'm thinking of buying a Sony Reader PRS 500 via a friend living in the US.

Anyway, I'm still deciding if the Sony Reader is what I need. My idea is to use it as a complement of books on paper. I usually surf the internet and read a lot (from articles to forums, blogs, etc.) and some of those things are really long and very uncomfortable to read on the PC screen. So I would like a device that allowed me to save anything that I found on the net and take it with me wherever I go. I already have a lot of "e-books" saved in my PC, which are mainly pdf's. So I have to make sure I will be able to read pdf's reasonably on my Sony Reader. Someone in this forum said that you can solve the legibility problem of pdf's by formatting them into rtf's? So, as far as I understand, there will be no problems with pdf's on the Sony Reader... ?

Thanks in advance,
sanfel

Sony Reader does support pdf's ... but most pdf's are created for A4 format and do not resize very well on the reader screen.

I have seen multiple posts about this topic on this forum (and have experienced it first hand)

cheers, Ken

I suppose we have almost the same purpose of usage of the e-ink devices. I have been watching them for quite a long time now because I also need to read lot of articles and other text in electronic format and am very uncomfortable with reading that on the computer display.

My advice would be: If you need it VERY urgently, then you might want to consider the Sony Reader. But be sure to spend quite a while going through this forum and looking at PDF reading on Sony Reader workarounds. There are several of those, some better, some worse, but, at least for me, it is not what I am looking for.

So I would rather highly recommend to you to just wait, because there are Plastic Logic products (see also this post) in the pipeline. They are currently building a factory in Germany and plan to start production in 2008. To me, this looks like a killer, but it remains to be seen whether they can fulfil their promises and also get the products on the market in time.

Going on Hols to Florida a week on monday so finally decided on the Sony Reader.

Got one via Ebay, arrived last week.

So now I've loaded a bunch of books to read on holiday.

First impressions is that i'm seroiusly impressed with the screen, the flip page speed doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Only grip I have so far is that copy or moving stuff around using the connect software is hideously slow and if you put lots of files on the SD card it takes about a month to load.

Nothing to do with "Connect". It's because the Reader has a USB 1.1, not a USB 2, port.

Awwww...I thought this was going to be another excuse to launch into some Connect bashing.

I'm from Spain. I bought my two Sony Readers on ebay (my mother see it and she wanted another ;-) . Look for one seller with a lot of stars, if he sell a lot of sony readers before will be better, and require insurance, the insurance will be only 5-10 US dollars and it will be safer it the shipping is lost.

I bought it at www.bhphotovideo.com, thanks @ igorsk for the tip.

It took just 5 days from the to hold the Reader in my hand. Shipping with UPS is pretty save and fast.

Right now I`m charging the battery an then start to upload some of my ebooks.
I got mine from there as well - it took about a week from New York to NZ which I thought was pretty good. Sony Connect are even quite happy to register me as I long as I say I live in the US So ....
