I think this 3.1 version of the software is a nightmare. I purchased two books last night and only one downloaded. Customer support tells me that some of their books have not been converted over to the new format yet, so I should keep trying everyday and eventually the book will be converted and can be downloaded.

I also con't get the library to synch with my PRS-600 any longer. The customer support solution? Turn of synchronization and drag the books from the library to the reader.

Sounds to me that someone had a deadline to get the new software and ebook format out to the public and was afraid to say "it ain't quite ready yet."

I'm just about ready to post my PRS-600 on Ebay and buy a different device.

Sony makes great hardware, but their software is regrettable. I don't understand why they can't seem to get it together. iTunes can manage hundreds of thousands of files - with impeccable stability and zero lag. The Reader Library, on the other hand, can barely handle a few dozen text files.

The software's primitive functionality is bad enough. (It drives me crazy that you can't even modify the title/author metadata.) But it's inexcusable that the software doesn't work...
I totally agree! I think the problem is that sony is Using Adobe software. The Reader is written in Adobe Flash. Flash was a horrible development environment under Macromedia, and Adobe has made it even worse and more bloated. Sony also uses Adobe Adept DRM, which means they use another bloated Adobe application that doesn't work well. Don't get me wrong, Adobe can do software right. I love Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2, but the roots of those applications go back more than two decades. But they seem to have lost their way when it comes to documentation software.

@tscharf: I have never been able to get the sync to work...it's lousy. All I can do with any consistent result is to drag and drop. I finally just accepted that the Sony software is incredibly limited <-- how's that for being diplomatic? And 3.1 appears to be no better. I'll need to use it some more before making a decision on where I'm headed with e-books next. I doubt another Sony purchase is in my future if this is where we're headed.

When I got the 500, I did try auto-sync and found it didn't work well. So I turned it off and never looked back.

Yeah, what's up with that? And, honestly, why exactly is the advantage of using the Sony software that you use it for? The store?

Interesting that you should ask
Some advantages I can think of:
  • It maintains time and date on your Reader.
  • It handles images, audio and notes on your Reader (unlike Calibre).
  • It now handles ePub (DRMed or not) for you.
  • It was made by the people who made the device, so compatibility and handling of file transfers is meant to be guaranteed.

I've never used auto sync. Don't see the point as I only want my to-be-read books on my reader.

new sony software out now!

I'm running with Vista and had to add the new executable "Reader Library.exe" as a DEP exception.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I still could not get it to work-the bottom line is that sony needs to make it's software user friendly, not all of us are computer experts. I am not!

Anyway, this morning I got a notice from the library that one of the ebooks on hold was now available to download. I downloaded the book and got the message that the Reader Library had stopped working. I then deleted the new software and was able to download the ebook using adobe and then was able to get it on my reader using the old ebook software. Now I'm wondering if I should just leave things the way they are since I mainly use the reader for library books. I really had a lot of trouble with the software back in Oct, called support and everything was working perfectly. I really hate to screw things up if the new software is a nightmare and you have to update adobe, etc, etc. I may buy a Kindle for the free ebooks-if I want to buy a book, I am still going to buy the hardcopy.

Is anyone having a good experience with the new software?

I've not tried using Adobe DE to download from library or elsewhere since I upgraded the Sony Library. Guess I should try that.

Everything is working fine here.

It seems it's mostly the Vista people that are having issues and you really should get off that OS asap.

Try running Reader Library as administrator.

Just to follow up on this. I just went to Books on Board and downloaded an epub (South of Broad - Pat Conroy) which I had previously purchased. It downloaded to Adobe DE correctly and is in my Adobe library (alongside the previous purchase).

just tried the same with a Library book and worked fine.

Does the reader have a clock?!? Or do you mean timestamps on the files?

I guess audio and images are interesting to some people. I haven't used either yet, and the notes function does seem like it is worth it (although some people here are working on a replacement, and there seems to be a dramatic limit on highlighting).

The rest doesn't seem all that compelling. I guess if it worked well, like, say, iTunes, it would be a first choice. Right now I am trying to avoid it. Doing some things manually isn't such a big deal, since I am not reading at a breakneck pace... ;-)

Thanks for the response!

The Reader needs a clock in order for the time limited DRM of ePub/PDF to work so you can borrow from the library.
