New Kindle owner - trouble with ss hack

I got my Kindle for Christmas and within the week discovered this page to replace the horrible default screensaver, but it's been another week and I still can't get it to work. The jailbreak and the ss hack both say installed successfully, but I still see the default screen saver even though I've loaded my custom sized and colored images I made. Can anyone help? I have a K3 wireless. Is there something else I need to do besides a full restart?

Thanks

Try uninstalling the screensaver hack then reinstalling. Follow these directions to make sure you didn't do something wrong the first time. https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kind...nd_3.x_Kindles

You didn't say you put it in, and I'm not psychic; I had no way of knowing you did restart your Kindle.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as a dick, I thought I wrote it in my original message, except I accidentally wrote blank random file twice. I'm sorry about that, I corrected my original message.

Also, does anyone know if images larger or smaller than 600x800 will work on the Kindle? I know some of the other ereaders (ex: Sony PRS-650) will automatically scale the image to fit the screen.

Smaller images will appear, but with a white border. The Kindle doesn't automatically scale.

As screensavers, I found if my images were not 600x800, they displayed oddly. Partial overlaps of either older images or the same image overlaying a displaced portion of itself.

I cropped images to generally fit the standard rectangle of 600x800 and then used Irfanview to slightly stretch/shrink the image to the exact 600x800. If I was close enough on my cropping, the image was not really distorted.

First post is always a dumb question

So I went through the steps (all so well writen and explained thanks so much!) and everything has gone off without a hitch.... Exceeeppttt... I can't change the font in my books themselves. I followed the link defining what each font controls.. But I'm lost at .... Serif_*.ttf ?? I assumed the * was a fillin for _Bold, _BoldItalic. BUT I've changed most of .. well.. everything... , and I still can't get the font in the books to change. I managed to get through the blank fonts and screens with FT Override without asking for help lol I thought i could make it all the way. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Make me feel dumb? Please? :-D

@JohnHaxx: You did RENAME the fonts you wanted to Serif_[Bold/Italic/whatever].ttf didn't you? And you rebooted afterwards?
It's the bloody obvious, but just to make sure...

Obvious is good though, start at the bottom like any tech support.. Is your computer plugged in? Did you press the power button? Do you get to the login screen? (even though I told them I dropped my laptop own the stairs and the screen broke) Lol Redundancy helps. Yes I did rename them all. I have all the font's working... Just.. can't figure out how to change the fonts in the reader itself, for the books... >.> I just don't know which font does it :-( And I read the post https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...6&postcount=97 But I'm lost at Serif_*.ttf ... I know that's not the file name.. because windows can't register a file with a * in it.. >.> so what am I missing?

P.s. I love the fast response.. win... <3 thanks much!

I just went through the jailbreak & screensaver process, worked flawlessly. One thing I noticed is that the wiki guide says to move the linkss folder to the kindle when copying the SS bin, but the guide in the first post of this thread says that installing the bin will create the linkss folder. I went with the thread and never touched the linkss folder from the zip. I installed the bin and when I hooked my Kindle back up to the PC the linkss folder was indeed created and I put my pictures into the appropriate folder. Just thought I would mention that, it had me confused about which method I should follow though I'm sure both work. Thanks to everyone involved in making this hack possible, it's great being able to customize your Kindle and getting rid of those original screen savers!

@JohnHaxx: OK. maybe this is more bloody obvious but:
Let's assume you want the Georgia font you find on your PC. So you copy them to some other place and rename them:
Georgia.ttf -> Serif_Regular.ttf
Georgia Bold.ttf -> Serif_Bold.ttf
Georgia Italic.ttf -> Serif_Italic.ttf
Georgia Bold Italic.ttf -> Serif_BoldItalic.ttf

Then you copy these files to your Kindle /linkfonts/fonts, thereby overwriting the original Serif fonts (you may consider making a copy of those first, in case you want to revert).
Then you reset and your books should be displayed in the new font. Be aware, though, that the majority of fonts which look good on your PC will not work very well on the Kindle.
Maybe this resolves it, maybe I'm completely missing the point. Lemme know...

Hi

I have just installed this Jailbreak and Screensaver hack on my Kindle (Wi-Fi & 3GUK), and it is working great! Thanks. But I have some questions!

1. I have installed 3.0.3 from Amazon and jailbroke that, but if Amazon releases 3.0.4, and I get it delivered OTA, do I have the option to reject it so I can uninstall the Jailbreak / Screensaver hack?

2. In regards to question 1, if I wanted to update to 3.0.4 (assuming that will be the version number), would I need to uninstall the Jailbreak or is the entire firmware overwritten on update?

3. Is there anyway Amazon can detect this OTA? And possibly disable my Kindle?

I appreciate these questions have probably been asked before, but the thread is 85 pages long!!!

I may have more questions later, but for now, Thanks a million for this!!

Stew

You can't reject it but you can prevent it by keeping your 3G and WiFi off, which you probably don't want to do.

The jailbreak is designed so that you don't have to remove it or the hacks installed with it when it's time to update.

I don't know if they can detect a hack but all my Kindles are hacked (K1 for a couple of years and K2 for over a year) and I've never had them disabled by anyone.

So if I understand this thread correctly, no one will ever be doing a Georgia2 Kindle 3 font porting due to commercial restrictions? I love this font and hate to see it kept away.

I tried one of the Georgia's from here after installing the font hack:
http://charles-reace.com/Kindle_Hacks/fonts/

But of course all it did was make books refuse to open and screw up everything in general.

So no love for us folks with Georgia on our minds?
