"Virtual" books won't add to calibre library

Hi! I'm having trouble with my Calibre program and don't know how to contact someone to get help. Half of the books from my Kobo Glo have transferred nicely into my Calibre library, but 90 titles won't transfer as it says that 'the following books are virtual and cannot be added to the calibre library'. These books are epubs that I have purchased from the Kobo bookstore. Why can't they be added to my calibre library?

Are you sure those books are actually epubs? This warning should only happen for kepubs that came from Kobo. That means they were purchased from Kobo and downloaded directly to the device over WiFi or from the Kobo desktop application. The reasons for this is that calibre does not have full support for kepubs (cannot extract metadata or covers or convert from kepubs), cannot handle the Kobo DRM and there is no way to send the kepubs back to the device so that they will sync with the Kobo servers.

My usual advice for this is to download the epub version of the book from the Kobo web site and add that to calibre. On the next connection, calibre should match these together. You can also add an empty book into calibre if you just want to record that the book exists somewhere.

Thank you for answering my question. If I go and download the epub versions of my books through calibre, would this mean I have to pay again? I have over 90 books with this issue. I wish I'd known about this as I would have bought all of my ebooks through the calibre search function!

Once you have bought a book from Kobo you can download it as many times as you want, and in either ePub or kEpub format as often as you want.

The kEpub format gets download either via Kobo Desktop or the device itself when connected via WiFi.

To get the ePub format, go to the Kobo website, logon to your account and then view "My Library". Besides each book you will see a Blue box entitled DOWNLOAD EPUB.

Clicking this will download an ACSM file, that when opened will launch Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) to actually download the ePub.

I followed your instructions but unfortunately Adobe Reader says that it cannot open the file because it's not a supported file type or it has been damaged. I've tried it with 3 titles so far and keep getting the same message. Any thoughts?? Do I need to download Adobe Digital Edition separately?

Okay. I have downloaded Adobe Digital Edition. I have signed up for an Adobe ID. I have used this ID to authorise my computer and my Kobo ereader. I have read the "Getting Started with ADE" ebook.

Even so, when I click "Adobe DRM epub" in my Kobo account library, Adobe Reader tries to open it and shows the error message. I have tried dragging and dropping, manually starting ADE, everything. The epubs just won't open.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Go to your Kobo account.
Right-click and Save This Link. Make sure you actually download the .acsm file, do not automatically open it in a program.

Go to your downloads folder.
Right-click on the .acsm file, and check the properties. I suspect you will find that adobe reader is set to automatically open the file.
Change it to default to Adobe Digital Editions.

If your browser is Firefox and it doesn't prompt you to save the file, got to Preferences ==> Applications, and change .acsm there as well -- set it to Always Ask.
