GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYS!

ANDROID 2.1 IS RELEASED FOR A81!

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'll play with this tonight and have a look. According to some who has installed it there are improvements however still the same minor issues as the original 1.6 but --- 2.1 on A81! LIVE WALLPAPERS!

If you don't hear anything from me for weeks and weeks --- that means all is doing good as I will probably spend so much time with my A81.

Cheers.

@Spatulator: I tried the Silverlight versions but went back to plain wince since I often couldn't get the keyboard to come up when I needed it with Silverlight and though it looks nice it's not quite as functional as the wince desktop.

@pphilipp: I not only can't watch live YouTube videos, I can only rarely get mine to connect to the internet at all so I've pretty much stopped trying. It still has a lot of functionality but the even my iPod Touch is far better for internet usage than the A81. I also have the problem with suspend, usually if I suspend for just a minute or so and then start up again, but sometimes it flakes out no matter what so I generally just shut it down instead since it boots up pretty quickly. The smaller keyboard in the more current firmwares should work fine in portrait mode or you could just use the handwriting option.

@mervsduh: that's great news, I'll have to try to find the firmware since the one on the Witstech site is still from 2-26-10. Did you get it from the vendor? From the comments on the jiongtang site it's still buggy with some sound and stability issues. At least it looks like they haven't abandoned those with the original A81.

You know, for some reason I found it slightly humorous this morning that the 1.8.9 and 1.8.11 firmware has the power point/word/excel viewers as well as jetcet pdf viewer...but I can't find this firmware for the A screen. lol

I've installed the 1.8.11 firmware in an attempt to copy the viewers from it and then load them onto the 1.8 firmware that works on my 1060, thus far they keep telling me that they don't exist. lol

Some info about Android 2.1 beta on A81:

1) Touchscreen responsiveness is said to be fixed.
2) Added hardware acceleration for both 2D and 3D.
3) WiFi issues are not fixed(something about being able to work only with static IP(?))
4) Improved video playback.
5) Still no GPS and Bluetooth.
6) Still no battery indication.
7) Issues with connecting A81 to PC.
8) Some "screen drift" issues, I didn't get it.

Some pictures:

New version of A81 called A81E is available on taobao for 1200-1300 CNY, it's around 200 USD.

On the JT forums, they're also saying the sound doesn't work or is very, very quiet? The "screen drift" they are talking about, I believe, is related to the A and C screens...I still have this issue with recent WinCE f/w as well. Are you able to adjust your screen brightness? Most people are not. And occasionally, the screen calibration goes "crazy and needs reflashed" as one user put it. lol

I don't own A81, still waiting for working Android, lol.

I forgot to include it in the list, Wits improved sound driver, but volume is still low.

Wits call this "2.1 beta", but from my point of view it's more like "alpha", let's hope for an acceleration of development.

@Dalkor - Gotcha, I think I'm sticking with Win CE instead of Android. I've already invested too much time into getting everything I want to work how I want...and if I switch to Android, I'm afraid I'll have to start all over again. lol

@ColdSun - Somewhere around page 7ish on this thread we were talking about the smaller on screen keyboard, did anyone ever figure out how to "install" the small keyboard into the options for Win CE or did you find a way to disable the LargeKB that pops up by default every time you touch a text box?

Download this and look through it. It has a version of Foxit that is easy to install. I haven't, personally, looked for Jetset yet. http://filefactory.com/file/b40cdc6/...E6freeware.zip

@ColdSun, the Samsung Q1EX-71G looks like it's just waiting for a ColdSun review...lol

@DMDyne, thank you so much for the app package. I really appreciate it.
My W1060 is looking better and better

WinCEMahjong Port

I found some Mahjong source at http://pocketmahjong.codeplex.com/ and proceeded to pretty it up, and begin fixing some of the crashes.

Hopefully I have removed all Windows Mobile dependencies and screen layout deficiencies from it, and have something that will look good on our higher res tablets.

Here's a first version of it, so I'd appreciate anyone who could test it on their machine.

Download WinCE Mahjong
  • Okay, caveats...it was late and I am done fiddling with the icon...it'll just be the default for this first version till I can find out what voodoo it expects.
  • I think the only dependency in it is Compact Framework 3.5
  • I know it starts like a pig, so slow you may give up on it. Once it starts, it seems fine. I know I made it slower with the felt background graphic, but I'll start digging into the guy's painting code in detail to see if there's some improvements to be made.

Please let me know your experiences since I haven't played out too many full games with it yet since I was doctoring it up

I have A81 and I have installed Android 2.1

Verdict: It's perfect!

* The touchscreen is so smooth and responsive that you won't even think its resistive
* The keyboard no longer flash whenever you type. You will now enjoy using the keyboard as the touchscreen is so responsive
* The system is now very stable and no longer loses the widgets whenever you shut it down which was my gripe on Android 1.6 on A81. I can now reliably shutdown my A81 and turn it on and not loose my widgets and my apps. I have littered my screen already with heaps of widgets and apps

My A81 is now perfect. I have been using it mainly for manga reading and web browsing --- and I am very happy with A81 Android 2.1. I have some awesome widgets on my screen - it is more like a newspaper now with on the spot info on screen before I use it for anything else.

Its freaking awesome!

I have an A81 that a friend gave me to play around with.
Where are you getting the Android 2.1 firmware? I would like to load it up and give it a try.

That is good to hear because the hardware always looked good, just poorly implemented by the OS. How is the playback of HD media? Which files are now supported? I suppose it depends on the player you have.

Have you tried a graphics program, drawing onscreen?

How good is it in viewing PDF after reading for a few hours?

Thanks
Patricia

@DMDyne: Exactly my worries about switching to Android. I finally got my A81 to do most of what I want and I don't want to switch until I hear Android is much more stable. The latest firmware (1.8.11) has a much smaller keyboard built into it. It doesn't always pop up for me so I have to keep the taskbar "always on top" and "auto hide" which hides it in apps that don't need it such as CorePlayer, AlReader2 and MMCE but lets me access it for browsing or can get to the desktop.

The 1.8.11 build is at
http://bbs.witstech.com.cn/dispbbs.a...did=10&Id=1697 which I found at http://www.jiongtang.com/fourm/viewt...hp?f=39&t=1298.

I had a hard time locating 2.1 but have it loaded now. Found it on Chinese Rayfile website. I am impressed.
One major flaw... there are no buttons for page back, forward and return to home.
I'm using the hardware button so much, its ridiculous.

Any thing I could add to overcome this?
