Hello,

I already started a thread for a book I am looking for, but HarryT kindly pointed out that this thread exists for exactly this purpose. So, if anyone can help me, this is my initial description:

not long ago an article either here or maybe at slashdot led me to a site of an author writing a science fiction novel. I believe it was destined to become a trilogy, but he was just finising the first volume, the finished chapters were available for download. The book (or books) were free of charge and several people had given good testimonies to the story so far.

Now, the sad thing is, i bookmarked the site, bud lost my bookmarks alltogether and now I cannot google the thing as I do not remeber the name of the author or the books. Right now, I'm tearing hair off my head, as I spent few hours hunting for the site with no success. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I would appreciate any hints

And this is where I stand now:

Seveal people responded, but I still came empty handed. Suggested authors were: Jeffrey Carver, Steven Lake (Earthfleet series), Boyd Morrison (that one actually is quite distant from what I am looking for).

The webpage with the book looked very similar to how Earthfleet web (realmsofimagination.net) looks like, albeit it had more green. (black/green scheme).

I know, this is not much information to go on, but any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thank you

Probably every child in Britain grows up on a staple reading diet of Enid Blyton books - at least they did in my generation . Her creations - "The Famous Five", "The Secret Seven", etc, are part of our culture, they are so well known. Is she really not known in other countries?

Thanks, John. It's interesting how authors that we just assume are known to everyone can turn out to have very "local" fame.

I grew up with "The Bobsey Twins" series .... "The 5 Little Peppers" series (okay, I only had one) .... and of course the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. But I haven't heard of your author either, Harry. USA again here.

Absolutely. I was brought up on Enid Blyton, my parents read them, and so have my kids. The adventure series which brought this up was a particular favourite of mine (and my daughter's).

If it was not too long ago, it may still be in your browser history.

BTW: This is a great reason to install Xmarks even if you only use 1 PC.

I can definitely attest to this, most assuredly part of the British culture, I remember reading all of these books multiple times as a child and both my brothers (much younger than me) also read them as children.

I think it's fairly safe to say that if you mention Enid Blyton to anybody from Britain they will at the very least have heard of her if not actually read her stories

I'm kind of amazed to find out as HarryT mentioned that an author such as Enid Blyton would be relatively unknown outside of our fair isles.

Possibly, but she's certainly known in Australia. I even remember a late 70's (?) TV series...is that the opening theme running through my head..."We are the faaamous fiiiive..."? I've even seen current references to them in popular culture, by comedians, for instance (though perhaps this is a generational thing...Gen X may laugh, but Gen Y may go, "Huh?").

Cheers,
Marc

I remember that TV show as well I hated it because the characters didn't fit my imagining of how they would look/act from my interpretation of the books.

Little did I know at the time that this would be a recurring theme whenever I watch an adaptation of a book after reading said book first! I always try to watch before reading now to save any dissapointment

I'm hoping some super geeky techie would tell you how to retrieve your lost bookmarks or internet history. It always seems things linger in a PC.

She was a staple for my generation in New Zealand, too. "Noddy" for the littlies, then "Famous Five", "Secret Seven", etc. A legacy of the British Empire
