Is this a fiction, or non-fiction book?

"Peter and the Starcatchers" is a fictional prequel.
"J.M.Barrie and the Lost Boys" is a non-fiction account of the origins of the story.

Edit: Oops, too late.

Thanks! I was looking for the fiction, but the nonfiction sounds interesting too.

Okay, the book I am trying to locate is actually a sci-fi series. There are many, many characters. There is a struggle between purebred humans and clones (some of whom have strange abilities). One of the secondary characters was the daughter of an important political figure (she is assisting the underground) but it turned out she was actually a clone because her pervy father had murdered the original while engaged in inappropriate behavior. The main characters are a guy and a girl (maybe one or two others the guy may have been named David) who end up super powerful and years in the future they are on a planet with a maze of sorts that has something important in the center. Wow, in hindsight that doesn't seem very helpful. I hope someone has a clue as to what I am describing.

Thanks in advance,

I hope someone can help...

About 25 years ago I read a book about the Spanish Armada. Included in the book was a lengthy quote from the English Admiral's despatch to Queen Elizabeth, which was one of the most perfectly beautiful examples of Elizabethan prose I've ever read.

Can I recall the author or title of the book? Nope.
Can I find it in my public library? Nope.

Any clues gratefully received.

Well, the English admiral was Sir Francis Drake, if that helps.

There was a divided command, Drake was the Vice-Admiral; the Admiral was Lord Howard of Effingham, and it was he who wrote the despatch.

I was guilty of imprecision in the first post - what I'm really wanting to get my hands on is the despatch; the book is therefore the means to the end :-)

Here's a despatch, but it's written to Sir Francis Walshingham:

Thank you Patricia - definitely getting warmer. I suspect that the despatch is Effingham to Walsingham, 29th July (the one that's not on luminarium). If getting hold of the book fails, then I can add it to my list of 'Things to research when in London'.

Years ago, in the late 70's, I read a book that dealt with the Earth tilting on its axis....it was fictional, of course, and now I can't even remember why it did this......maybe because the polar ice caps melted?

Does anyone remember reading this? If I'm not mistaken, it was an old book even when I read it, in hardback form. The idea was to be in a plane when it happened so that you could land safely after it was over.
Don't know if anyone is still looking for this (Desertgrandma?), but I think what you were looking for is The HAB Theory by Allan Eckert.

I have a friend who's looking for a book:

Quote:
Many years ago I was staying with some friends for a few days, and began to read a sc-fi short story anthology they had. One of the stories stuck in my head, but I have no idea who wrote it (H.G. Wells perhaps??), nor its title.

The premise was a society of human-like beings whose planet, for reasons I can't recall, was no longer habitable. They collected thier own DNA, altered it, and re-introduced themselves in the ocean. The beings in the water had some early records but because they had been damaged, were unsure of their origins. One particular thing I recall is that they had knowledge (from the books) of chemistry, but were unable to practice it because the chemicals would float away whenever they'd begin an experuiment. This too made them curious about their origins.

Does anyone here know the title of this story? If so, thanks in advance!!
Thanks for the help,
John

Ooops, I posted this earlier in it's own thread-- didn't see the sticky. Sorry!

Here's a toughie-- I once read (in hardback) a collection of early science fiction short stories that contained a really odd one featuring a boy whose family was perplexed by his inability to eat anything but beer. Furthermore, he saw things nobody else could see, and spoke in complete gibberish. A plot point in the story was that the narrator recorded him with some sort of device, which he slowed down to reveal that the boy actually just spoke inhumanly fast.

Does anyone know what story this was? Bonus brownie points if you can tell me the collection-- I'd love to read this one again!
