Vielen Dank für den Tipp, klingt spannend (auch wenn es nur den deutschen Bereich abdeckt). Mal sehen, ob meine Bibliothek das hat.

Hier mal ein kleines Beispiel was (und wieviel!) so alles als "Bändchen" angeboten wurde. Natürlich hat man alle drei Bändchen (à 64 S.) zusammen gekauft, aber nicht notwendigerweise schon gebunden. Das war a) billiger und konnte b) leichter untereinander ausgetauscht werden.

Als Info zur frühen "Leser-Erreichbarkeit" empfehle ich auf die Schnelle bei Wikipedia die Begriffe: Antike Bibliotheken - Buchdruck - Buchmesse (Geschichte) - Leihbibliothek ... und die dort weiterführenden Links.

Bei der zugrundeliegenden Originalausgabe (1798; mit Farbbildern!!) war mit Bändchen = Band gemeint. In den späteren Gesamtausgaben blieb die Bändcheneinteilung formal zwar noch erhalten, diese wurden jedoch zusammengebunden.

Die später üblichen (Heft-)Bändchen hatten wohl zumeist nur 4-5 Bögen (d.h. 64 o. 80 S.).
