I just installed the FontForge portable version and it crashes. It does not load any fonts. Sorry, but it doesn't run. It's unstable. It installs, but it doesn't work.

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and this install of the portable version is a big FAIL! I cannot get it to load any fonts that are sitting on my E drive.

Interesting

I have it open right now, found a font and exported a key to svg, opened that in Inkscape.

Haven't really used FontForge that much yet. Running XP with SP3. I'm a little put off that FontForge hits my firewall with a warning about Xming X Server. I assume that is left over from the way unix/linux accessed the display but not sure if I want to make an exception in my firewall.

XP has about run its course. Recently had to upgrade to SP3 when hit a problem with Blender. And another program I use has been 'locked' to bar running under XP. Some is just related to the older PCs and the instructions their processors support. Others are the software/drivers just no longer compatible.

PortableApps.com doesn't post buggy software, they test before releasing. If the program itself doesn't work they don't release it as an 'official' App that would discredit them. However they no longer actively support XP either.

Don't know about Windows 7 not working.

My desktop was about twelve years old but since it died I'm using a slightly newer laptop. Probably fix it but for what I want to do I will probably need a newer PC any way. Just trying to decide what to get.

Sorry you didn't have any luck with the portable version.

Then maybe it is a problem with the portable version. I am running the installed version from their sourceforge:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/font...e-executables/

on Windows 7 - 64-bit. No problems.

There is also this site I stumbled across, which has newer Windows builds (although I have not installed/tested these):

http://fontforgebuilds.sourceforge.net/

Yep, probably time for an upgrade! You should probably build your own, it is a GLORIOUS time to build PCs. I have been running this beast for ~6 years now, and am tempted to finally upgrade. Don't know if I want to hold off for another year or two for the next generations of Intel CPUs.

The upgrade to an SSD though is just going to blow you away! Especially if you have been running on some ancient 12 year old XP computer. It is probably running like a snail!

Here is a site showing off some basic builds. It is mostly geared towards gamers, but it can give you some ideas of parts at all different price ranges (~$275-$3000+):

http://www.logicalincrements.com/

There is also this helpful subreddit where there is TONS of info on how to build your own, put parts together, etc. etc.:

http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/

I typically just aim for the $800-$1000 range, although I just built a new family PC for $600, and the thing DEMOLISHES my computer! (I spent about $1000 on mine ~6 years ago).

Thanks. I'll give one of those other versions a try.

I'm using the current version of FontForge on XP, Win 7 64 bit and on Linux. I can't say that it was worked perfectly, it's crashed from time to time on all platforms but for the most part it has worked well. I've been able to do everything I've wanted to do.

But I have never used the portable version, I've always installed it.
