Well, cleaning is easier with washing machines and they don't work around them.

"horrible fashion sense" is a matter of opinion, I feel robes are quite stylish (and if you want to argue, I have a spell I've been meaning to try out...)

Quick question: If I started reading this, will it take me a very long time to finish it? Is it anywhere near Game of thrones with regards to the length/readability, or is it more of a Harry Potter 7-book series (or more)?

I am not sure what reputation Game of Thrones has concerning length. Each individual book in the Dresden Files is not any longer than other regular novels. There is a lot of them already (15 main books plus extra short stories). Even up to right now it would take much longer to read Dresden than Harry Potter. There is about maybe 7 more regular case files and then a 3 book post apocalyptic finish to the series. So all in all it will take a long time to finish reading, and it is not yet finished writing.

I've read the 7 Harry Potter books 3 times. I've read the Dresden files series (as it existed at the time of each reading) 4 times. I read the first 50 pages of Game of Thrones and decided to abandon it at that point. I've never been tempted to try again.

The first episode of the tv show dissuaded me from wanting to read the books. That and the ongoing concern that the series may never be finished..at least not by Martin.

That is the main reason I am not even giving Games of Thornes Thrones a chance to even start reading. If eventually the last book is published, and hopefully not by a ghost writer, might I change my mind and give it a try.

From what you say even the tv show is not worth bothering with?

My personal sort-of-hope is that GRRM dies really soon now and Brandon Sanderson takes over.

Also -- my general policy is never to do a book the disservice of judging it based on its movie.

That would honestly depend on your tastes. The show is just too violent for me
Spoiler:
(one of the earliest scenes is a young boy being callously, and nonchalantly pushed out of a window, for seeing something he shouldn't have seen).
Plus, I'm not really a fan of "everybody dies" storytelling.

Hahaha. I'd respectfully counterattack your personal sort-of-hope, eschwartz. Even if the TV show comes up with an ending for Game of Thrones, I would still await for the GRRM one (that is also, saying that he doesn't die, although...valar morghulis. I pray it doesn't happen)

I really haven't read Brandon Sanderson's works so I can't say.. but the Mistborn trilogy by Sanderson was mentioned to me before! (I haven't gotten around to purchase it though).
