I believe so, Astak is working with Adobe. I am not sure what the timetable is these days so they may release a different PDF reader initially in order to get the product out the door. But the Adobe version is in the cards.

Just to keep expectations from getting out of hand, Robert said (way back in post #569) they expect to receive the Adobe SDK in October, not that they expect to release DE in October. It will take them a while after receiving the SDK to adapt, integrate, test and deploy it.

In a private email I got from him the focus has shifted to the 6" model and they are targeting for early September. The 5", while not first, is still expected shortly thereafter. The delay and focus shift is due to them wanting custom designed hardware for a better user experience.

well that is mightily intriguing... do you have any idea of the magnitude of the changes ? like, will they completely modify the button layout or maybe just add one or two, or something along those lines ? or are you not allowed to say ?

I'm curious to know what about the 6" model and the price... actually I'm pointing between Mentor and PRS-505 which having the new firmware it can reflow PDFs... but Mentor's has also more memory flash than 505's.... lets see

Dear Zelda and Dale and all:

I have been staying mute for a while until things shook out a bit. The problem has been one of minimum orders. The factory wants a firm commitment for 10,000 units to get the low price, and ...while I think we will hit that... we cannot bank on that amount sold.

They still require a commitment on the 6 inch also... but we feel better about the 6 inch selling to the sufficient quantity. Also, we picked up a partner and they also wanted some design input. The formatting for eReader was not finished anyway so we redesigned the button layout.

It still has the rotary wheel but it is now in the bottom center. Additional buttons will be placed to the left and right of the rotary wheel for "Menu" and "Bookshelf". There will also be one button on the left bezel and one on the right bezel. These are for "page advance" and "page back". The unit will remain at 6.5 ounces and remain at .35 inch in thickness. The 6 inch will remain the lightest and thinnest and easiest to hold eBook Reader ever introduced.

It seems I email to Adobe DAILY trying to get an SDK for Digital Additions. It is perplexing how large firms ignore emails for weeks and make only token commitments on timeline when they do respond (no ill will intended). The unit will have a rudimentary .pdf on it (in addition to eReader on the Mentor and Mobipocket on the LiteBook) in any case... but we would very much like the best... seen as Digital Editions.

I am sorry for the delay. Frankly, it irritates me something fierce; but the reasons are sound. The six inch will release in September, with the 5 inch (as Dale said) not too far behind, once we get the final design for that size done.

Prices remain about where we planned; but I am staying off the pricing issue until I see it in writing. We realize, as Dale has said, PRICE is what is drawing the interest to our devices.

The 9.7 is still proceeding; but is still waiting for the final testing of the Flex Screen!

Robert, thanks for the update. Always great to hear what's going on.

Is the September launch of the 6" going to include both models with and without touchscreen/bluetooth/wifi?

Search functionalities

Dear RobertB.

I'am a student of science, and I can only say that I am glad that finaly ebook readers reach a level of pricing that even students can afford.
As a student of science my texts are often long, complex and many times only used for looking up different terms and concepts. Therefore the main feature in an ebook reader to be used in science litterature would be a search feature. Will you include this in any of your models?

About the sales I can say that I alone would be able to sell 100+ at my institute alone. I have a 12" Compaq tablet pc at the moment and people are constantly asking me where I got it and if I'm able to get one for them aswell...
I guess people don't bother to do a little research online themselves, but that's just my benefit.

Best/Thomas

I'd just like to have the device out as soon as possible.

Things like reflowing PDFs or a search function are nice to have features, which don't neccesarily need to be on the device when it's launched, those features can later be implemented with a software update.

Anyway, I do agree, that a search function would be great, for once, since it costs a certain amount of battery each time a page is switched, as a student, I'm using loads of manuscripts, ea with 100 pages or more, noone can remember just exactly where the bit of information needed is.

I'm stuggling if i should get an 8.9" notebook for school and an Astak Mentor, as a student however up to 500€ or more for those devices (together) is a lot of money, and I'd more than appreciate a search function in the Mentor - wheter when it's launched, or during a software update later on.

Thanks for keeping us up2date!

Hello RobertB,

first thank you for this little update, and honestly every projects are always at least in a little delay, in fact my own work project is in a little delay too since it's really BIG for only myself so.... :-)

But reading about the 5" and about you got a partner to check a revision design, so I would suggest: why not adopting same design of 6" for the 5"? So for sure it'll be appreciated for who is waiting for 5" and who will look at this 5" product?... In fact 6"'s design is very good since it feels a good manageability by hands and easy buttons without having too way buttons like Kindle's one, without mentioning the weight of the product since it's so thin...?
In this way Astak could be a bit more sure the 5" will have more units sold for sure...

Actually I'm still waiting for the 6" one... let's wait and see...

Ciao,
Luigi
