Secondly, I'm 36, and like every American, have been paying 'illegal' income tax since my first job in High School. The IRS has nooses around everyone so that a family can no longer BE a family. The husband has to work, the wife has to work, the wife's paycheck has to go towards food and/or child care.

The bad credit of this nation's people is brought upon us by the government that controls us. If I can find any tax loophole to try and regain some money from the corrupted bureaucracy, then you're darn-tootin that I'm gonna spend it however I see fit.

And don't get me started on the welfare families. I know some who have kids JUST so they can claim money back. She has 7 children, doesn't work, doesn't have a husband, and doesn't want one. She claims so much in monthly benefits, that she lives quite well. I, on the other hand, am in the bracket that they take the most out of. The single white male.

I only qualified for EIC because last year I volunteered my time for AmeriCorps-VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Similar to the Peace Corps, but you volunteer in your own community. The pay was about 800/month, before taxes. I was supposed to get the taxes back, but I didn't I lost almost all of it due to the $4300 stipend they paid on my school loan; it was considered income.

So, yeah, I'll take this and put it to very good use. It'll help pay for a year of tightening the budget.

Seriously though, I am waiting for more info on the Mentor True 'lite' version.

My ideal reader would be:
Screen Size - 8.5 x 11
8-16 level grayscale
Epson controller
Multiple Folder & Subfolder support
4GB SD card
PDF, TXT, HTML, CBZ, JPG, GIF, PNG formats
NO touch screen
NO 3g
MP3 - not needed, will never use
Wi-Fi - not needed, but might be used occassionally
Other formats can be easily converted to the above and DRM stripped.

So, just a reader only. Maybe I'll have the cash by the time the True comes out. Any behind-the-scenes updates on the True, Robertb?

Nothing like selective censorship on a site geared towards books. Apparently you choose what level of open exchange is "correct", right? wow...woe is you, huh? I as commenting it was nice to see the funds go to a good use, but apparently you have a guilty conscious and political agenda and were influenced by HarryT's waaaay of the reservation opinion.

Not "ignorance" as the incorrectly-used term for 'stupid', but in the manner of which the term is supposed to be, that of "uninformed".

I simply gave you the information in which I rebutted your remark. I hold nothing against you for it, as it was said off the cuff and ignorant of the circumstances.

I do hope you can see my view of things now. Regardless, what's said has been said, and I do hope we can put this behind us. I'd hate to be the cause of such malicious dialogue. I mena, look at my avatar. Do you really wanna see what happens if I complete my transformation into the Hulk?

I'm surprised. I had heard there was a "marriage penalty" in US taxes (though apparently only for a few couples with unusual earning/expense situations: I do the taxes for our family and we don't pay any more for being married). I had never heard there was a penalty for being single, though.

I had, however, always been under the impression that how much you paid had to do with how much you earned and how much of what type of expenses you'd had and that sort of thing.

For my own part, I don't mind paying taxes. There's always a twinge when I look at the bottom line and see how much it was, but then I think about the roads I drive on, the nice people at the firehouse who need gas for their trucks and hoses that don't leak so they can put my house out if it ever catches fire, the garbage and recycling service that comes by every week, the library, and the schools, and I realize that taxes are how I buy civilization.

That said, I see nothing wrong with buying an e-book reader with your tax refund. It's what I did with part of ours last year. I hope you enjoy your purchase as much as I have mine.

No. We post "watch your manners" posts when other people report your post as offensive, which is what happened in this case. You may not think that you are being offensive, but other people do, and when that happens, we ask you to consider how your messages may come across to others. In this case, a number of people clearly felt that your post "crossed the line" as far as rudeness went, and reported it as such.

Please be considerate to the feelings of other board members.

Totally seperate issue but did you know the entire amount of Income Tax collected by the USA federal government each year, goes directly to the Federal Reserve Bank?

Sounds reasonable right?

Did you know the Federal Reserve Bank is a privately owned institution?

Did you know that the way your system works is that your government borrows money from the Federal Reserve Bank to run your country and then uses your Income Tax to pay the money back, including interest?

So now ask yourself........why should you be paying interest to a privately owned bank for services like those you mention? Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to simply use the money collected for those services rather than borrowing the money for the services and then having to pay back the amount borrowed and the interest? Btw, being a firey myself it is nice to be acknowledged!

One of the Rothschilds brothers once said........."Give me control over a nations currency and I care not who makes the laws". Now think about the state the USA is in now and ask yourself who really runs the country? The banks or the people?

The above doesn't even deal with the legality of collecting income tax. Have you ever asked your member of parliment to show you the actual law that states you must pay income tax? Try it one day. It has been done before. In fact a group(can't remember the name of it now) went to court over it trying to force the government to show them the law. The governments argument in court was that it was not the responsibility of the government to inform every citizen of the law but rather it was the responsibility of the citizen to make themselves aware of their responsibility under the law and therefore they should not have to show the actual law to any citizen that asks to see it. The governments position was upheld and they didn't have to actually point out the law requiring a citizen to pay income tax. Wouldn't it have been easier to simply show the law? Doesn't it make you wonder why they didn't just show the law?

There is quite a bit of interesting reading out there about the issue if you are interested.

Uhm, the 16th Amendment was passed almost a century ago.... I am sure you can find it online.

Uhm, to begin with, there is some debate about whether or not the 16th Amendment was ever legally ratified or not. Interesting debate in and of itself and the evidence certainly seems to show pretty conclusively that it was not.

Secondly, this amendment does not allow the levying of income tax on a "natural person" since common law states that a "natural person" is entitled to all the proceeds earnt by said "natural persons" efforts. The principle of Common Law pre-dates and is generally recognised as being a higher authority of law than legislative law.

Now, if the 16th Amendment was legally ratified it is still only legislative law and therefore can not supercede common law.

So how does it allow the Government to levy income tax on the citizenry? Because it is not actually levying income tax on the "natural person". Common law gives no protection to a corporate entity. So the government sets up a corporate entity known as "THE TAXPAYER" and then has you sign up as the trustee of said "TAXPAYER". Being the trustee of this corporate entity you then become liable for any taxes levied on "THE TAXPAYER". Since you freely and voluntarily sign up as the trustee you have no protection under common law and must pay "THE TAXPAYER'S" debts.

So what to do? Simply don't sign up as the trustee.

That's the nutshell version.

But this really isn't the place for such a discussion so we should probably leave the thread to get back on target.
