Nothing is happening for me.
Just to make sure that I am not an idiot:
The root folder in the SD Card just means that you don't put it in any folders, you just drag it into the card, mine has three folder: usic, pics, and ebooks, I didn't out it in any of them.
Then, I start the cybook, when I get an image of the cybook on the screen, I press the big square button the front untill the screen flashes, then I release...right???

Except, nothing is happening for me.

Thanks

It only took a few minutes to install the update. If nothing is changing after half an hour, I think something is wrong. Can you try running it again? Was the battery fully charged when you attempted the update?

The update showed that it is working, after that, it gets stuck on the three dots and the little book.
I tried resetting and deleting the update file, nothing
it only works if I remove the SD Card

If it works without the SD card plugged in then either something on the card has been corrupted during the update process or there is something in your library that the new version doesn't like. Try re-formatting the SD card and loading all your files back on to it. If it still doesn't work then the new version probably doesn't like something about one of your files that the old version was happy with. If that is the case you will have to remove all the files and then add them back one at a time, testing the card in between, until you find the offending file.

685 made things worse for me!
I was reading a PDF right before I upgraded to 685 and after the upgrade I have not been able to read any PDF anymore. When I try to open one all I get is a "white screen" with the typical arrows to go up and down in the text but no text at all !
This really sucks. My Cybook never crashed before and with the upgrade I now also find it froze twice in once hour.
Im getting more than a little fed up with Cybook, when I bought it and had an extra inquiry it took them more than a month to respond to it.
When in a couple of years I buy my next eBook reader it will NOT be one from Cybook!

I've had numerous problems with my SD card--it never did work well, and I've reformatted the thing numerous times; it would work for a while and then suddenly hang my cybook at the second page (with the three dots), though it would work as soon as I removed the card and then reset. I've also had serious issues with missing bookmarks and lost page problems. So, I was thrilled to hear about the firmware update. I tried it last night, and it seemed to work well; several books that wouldn't keep bookmarks were working fine. Then, I tried to load an ebook straight to the SD card (this would be much easier for me) by turning the cybook off, removing the card, putting it in my computer, loading an ebook and then returning the card to the cybook. Now, the cybook won't go past the first page(Cybook Gen3). The led stays lit until I reset. It doesn't seem to matter if the card is in or not.

Embarrassing question--should one use the 'safely remove hardware' key to remove an SD card?

Any ideas?

Depends on your particular machine and system - on my Win XP I don't use it, and I never got a card corrupted, and some people here use it relligiously, and have the card corrupted anyway.

Sigh. Another case of 'it's really important....unless it's not.' Just to confuse us...I was actually kind of hoping it was just my ignorance that was the trouble. Embarrassing, but relatively easy to fix.

I've since tried to upload the new version again, but it's still bricked. I'm letting it charge, hoping that will do something. Not expecting, but hoping.

I have the feeling that most problems are created by the SD card not correctly fitting in its connector an coming loose.

I never had any problems. But last week I traveled a few days on a motorbike trip. And I ran several times into trouble with a non booting device or loosing my dictionary that is on the SD card. As soon as I removed the SD card and reinserted it the problems were gone. The Cybook was on the bike during the, 250 km per day, trips and there is a lot of vibration there. Now that I'm home the Cybook is stable again.

Nope. It's done that before, and it would work fine after resetting and removing the SD card. This time, it doesn't get past the first page, the one with the picture of the cybook and the words 'CYBOOK GEN3'. The LED light stays lit until I reset. It doesn't matter if the card is in place or not. If I'm understanding the sequence correctly, this suggests it's not running the firmware properly, as opposed to not being able to access certain files.
It should have plenty of power; it was fully charged last night and I charged it again this afternoon.
