If you get Neverwhere, put it on the top of your reading list - it is a 30 day expiring file (even more annoying DRM than usual, it's an adobe digital edition only).

Looks like you can download it up to 3 times (perhaps for different devices), but it's 30 days from download and it goes poof!

Does that mean that after 30 days I can throw away the file I have downloaded or just that after 30 days the file isn't available for download anymore?

I loved the last free book from HarperCollins, The City Of Pearl, so I went off to get this latest offering. For some reason I decided to read the terms and conditions, a first for me, and read that the offer is only valid for residents of the U.S. The book downloaded anyway, or I downloaded it anyway, anyway I have the book.

Just wonder why that is in the terms and conditions? What are the implications?

Mobipocket's and Adobe's DRM allow a time limited usage of an eBook. So when you download an eBook from a library that supports Overdrive, you get the eBook for about 21 days. Then after that, it goes back on the virtual shelf for others to borrow and you no longer can read it. But you could borrow it again if it's available. And if not, put a reserve on it.

It usually means that after 30 days the reader will refuse to read it, telling you it has expired. In some old software, you could reset your computer date back and read it anyway (don't know if that will work with digital editions -- it might if you never open it with a date where it has expired, it might always work and it might actually "fix" the file so it is dead even after you set your date back).

It's the same technology used for library rentals of ebooks.

Note that this is ONLY for the PDF download - not the other two, where you go thru checkout and use a coupon code. For those, you "own" them as much as if you had paid for them (they don't expire, at least not on purpose).

Probably HC doesn't have publication rights outside the US.

Implications?? You just bought yourself a ticket to Hades.
