Audible version of Alliance

The Audible version of Alliance of Equals is up for pre-order. Read by Kevin T. Collins, who has done many of the Liaden books. And in all but one case, done them well.

Alliance of Equals Release

First, a reminder that Alliance of Equals is officially released, and highly recommended. Ebook version at Baen, Amazon, Kobo or wherever. There is also an excellent Audible version.

Next, a strong recommendation to buy this book. The link is to Sharon Lee's blog, and an interesting and relevant post about why it's often important to encourage new readers to an existing series to buy the most recent book, even though it might not be considered a "gateway" book. A recommended read, and an important reminder for those of us who care about long established series.

Thank you for that link, it was very interesting. I had read Agent Of Change and loved it and then listened to Local Custom which was wonderful.

I then bogged on the whole reading order issue after listening to another of the audiobooks which didn't grab me due to the narrator (I knew I would have to go back and read the ebook of that one).

Your post here, and Sharon Lee's blog post, motivated me to bite the bullet and buy up the whole series (helped by a Kobo coupon!) and I am going to go with the Goodreads order and start at the beginning.

19 books is a lot to chew through, so it will take me a while, but I am glad to have them all, and I hope it keeps the authors going to write more by having bought the later ones in the series now rather than just getting them bit by bit.

Oh, you'll have a lovely time with them. There are lots of possible reading orders, as you've discovered. My first was Agent of Change, way back in the 80's. But then when they got dropped by their publisher (DAW?), I lost track of them for years and years. Until I got my Kindle and discovered webscriptions.com (aka, BaenEbooks.com) I am now re-reading the last couple to prepare for the reading of Alliance of Equals. I read it in the eARC version, but now will be reading the released version, probably starting with the audio book. Kevin T. Collins is the narrator, and he _can_ be very good. Though he did mangle one of these rather badly.

The Gathering Edge (Liaden Universe®) Hardcover – May 2, 2017

A heads up.

The Gathering Edge (Liaden Universe®) Hardcover – May 2, 2017
by Sharon Lee (Author), Steve Miller (Author)
Quote:
A series milestone as we welcome the twentieth amazing entry in the nationally best-selling Liaden Universe® series.

The luck runs rough around Theo Waitley. Not only are people trying to kill her and capture the self-aware intelligent ship Bechimo to whom Theo is bonded, they’re also trying to arrest her crew members, and throw the dignity of an important passenger, the duly-constituted norbear ambassador Hevelin, into question.

No wonder Theo and her crew felt the need of a break, and retired to what Bechimo refers to as "safe space." Unfortunately, safe space may not be so safe, anymore. It seems that things are leaking through from another universe, and another time. In fact, whole spaceships are coming through. One of those ships is a blasted battleship seemingly fleeing a long-lost war. What’s more, its crew may be members of Theo’s ancient ancestral line—her relatives. It’s certain that they are in dire need of help. Theo has a choice to make. It seems that Bechimo’s “safe space” is about to become deadly perilous.

Looking forward to it, though in one or both of its electronic formats.

Well I finished Crystal Soldier and Crystal Dragon back to back. So good. I am now reading Written in Red by Anne Bishop to break things up, and then I will read Balance of Trade.

NEW ECHAPBOOK AVAILABLE

Sleeping with the Enemy, Adventures in the Liaden Universe(R) Number 22, has been published at Amazon, BN, ibooks, Kobo, Page Foundry, Scribd, Tolino, 24Symbols. Sleeping contains two stories — “Chimera,” which was originally published on Baen.com, and “Friend of a Friend,” which is new to this chapbook. The chapbook also includes an author’s introduction.
Neither of these is about a Korval core characters so it can be passed over by all but die-hard Liaden fans. Chimera does help answer the 'what about the Dramliza!' question that has bugged me in the aftermath of Plan-B. Friend is Villy focused and has some nice flavor but no plot hints/filling-in (that I know of.)

True, they're not core characters, but still, good stories. And, like most of the chapbooks, enjoyable on their own. Plus, the filling in of Villy's character definitely leads to better understanding.

Finally was able to read this. Very mixed thoughts for me on this one.

On the one hand I enjoyed being back in the Liaden universe and seeing the overall story of things progress. On the other hand none of the story lines covered
Spoiler:

resolved much of anything. It would have been nice to see at least some of them a little more wrapped up especially since the next book is "all Theo, all the time" (a good thing for me, but...) so it may be years before much more progress is shown for these events.

Overall I am positive about the book. Just would have liked to see a little more progression in places, some threads wrapped up, or come together with others.

All initial thoughts, some of which may change over a few days, or on the inevitable re-read.

Do post a review on Amazon, please. Author is shooting for 200 reviews and is at 156 when I looked this morning.

And yes, I want more resolution. OTOH, nothing left me on a cliff, either.

And Sharon Lee just posted today that she has pushed back the submission date for the book after the next Theo book to the end of the year, instead of this month.

That's too bad, but stuff happens. Hopefully they'll get stuff worked out and be able to meet the new date.
