You don't get it. The fonts are not being used for any other purpose other than personal. I'm not trying to make any money from this. I'm not causing Amazon any financial loss. If Amazon didn't want me to be able to do this, then Amazon could have blocked me from downloading the firmware because I don't own a Kindle PW2. Amazon blocks me from downloading eBooks with my web browser because I don't own a Kindle. Amazon can easily do the same thing with the firmware.

The LCD version of Bookerly is 1.00. The eInk version is a higher version number. I don't have the font handy to check the version number.

Anyway, why complain about my getting Bookerly from the firmware when most people in this thread have downloaded the LCD version from some website it should not have been posted to.

Probably because they aren't claiming they are doing nothing wrong by doing so whereas you are claiming that since Amazon let you download the firmware file you're free to do with it as you please.

And how is downloading a copy of Bookerly not doing anything wrong? The LCD version is the one that's out there in the wild and anyone using it on a Kobo has downloaded it.

I'm going to ignore anyone who just cannot see the difference.

But if we were not able to patch the advanced font control to work with side loaded fonts, Bookerly would look the same or similar.

When the weight of Bookerly is enough, it does look pretty good.

Which we can do because Kobo has left their devices open to customization, unlike Amazon.

Actually, I didn't patch my firmware, I just added a line to the kobo.conf file:
readingFontWeight\Bookerly=0.15 works well on Glo HD and H20. It looked a bit too thick on the Glo, but I didn't bother trying to optimize that device.. it looks pretty bad now compared to the modern readers.

Ooh thanks, I could use this to experiment with some other sideloaded fonts which are a bit light/thin.

Question: if the .conf file is modified like that, does it pose any problems for future auto firmware updates? And if new firmware is installed, does that over-write your changes such that you need to do them again?

Changing the config file like this doesn't usually affect firmware updates. The most likely thing to happen is that the new firmware would ignore the setting. There is a small chance that the meaning of a setting will change, or the range of values. In that case, some new or changed feature might not work until the option is reset. This is unlikely to happen and if it does, it will be discovered quickly and instructions for fixing it will be posted quickly.

I tried this and the font just looks too lightweight. The other fonts on my Kobo Glo HD are quite dark in comparison.

Someone mentioned stripping the hints from the font files. What's the advantage of doing that?

I just double checked with firmware 3.18.0. Reading ePub via RMDSK, Bookerly works as it should. Italic shows up as regular italic. I am using the eInk version of Bookerly and not the LCD version. So maybe it is the LCD version that has this issue with italics.

good to know - I think my kindle voyage now has the OTA update so I should go find a book and confirm that.

but on the other hand, what was originally trying to do was use the older LCD version in 3rd party apps on the fire tablet & as fire => tablet => LCD, the LCD version is the "correct" one for other fire apps ?

i could, I suppose, get the newest Bookerly font from the voyage onto my PC & then into the mantano app on the fire & see how italics behave, though I have never tried to find stuff on the voyage. Will its bookerly font be copyable.

I may just stick with the well behaved Cecilia, everywhere.

I'm also on 3.18.0 but on a Glo HD (eReader auto-updated, no side-loaded firmware), and I get italic as bold-italic.
Using ePub and RMDSK on stock firmware (no patches or any tweak). eInk version of Bookerly extracted from PW2 firmware.

I'll extract the font again just in case I didn't performed the extraction correctly.
