What exactly are you changing?

Here's a screenshot of the fonts immediately after importing them.

The metadata looks exactly like your screenshot. Yet after exporting to ttf I still get bolditalics instead of italic.

Just choose the style with parameters. Mine works, I don't really know why yours don't.

Do it for all three of them, even if they seem correct:

I have no idea on the legality of pulling the eInk version of Booklery from a Kindle Firmware update. But it can be done with a legal download of the Kindle PW2/3 firmware update.

Legality of fonts are different than your usual intellectual property. Type design itself isn't protected, the software is protected.

Without going deeper into it, you can use the typefaces you got with Kindle, but you can't include it in a software, whether it be a website or application.

Using Bookerly on Kobo is alright, but redistributing it or embedding it in a ePub is not.

It's tricksy, and varies by country. (Most modern) digital font files are protected as pieces of software in the USA, though the artistic aspects of the typeface itself are not. However unauthorised copying of the software file remains covered by software copyright law. (Recreating the typeface all by yourself is not necessarily a copyright violation in the USA, though it may be in some other countries.)

Amazon's clear intent as per their marketing is that Bookerly is exclusively for Kindle devices.

but, not being a lawyer, I do not know how intent translates into legal protection.

whether they could / would sue anyone for placing it on a rival device is debatable ,I think not.

Amazon makes their firmware available for anyone even without a Kindle. Being able to pull out Bookerly is done using free tools.

but surely their intent is "here is our firmware for you to install on your kindle"- it would not work as-is on any non kindle device.

the fact that you can download it "no questions asked" and can disassemble /repurpose it is not a great defence?

I could "pull out" all sort of stuff from my PC with free tools - like DVD decryption & software registration keys, probably -
begin able to do it does not grant any entitlement to take those & re-use.

That has to be one of the most ridiculous defenses I've ever seen. Many news websites allow anyone to view their content. I can make a copy of that with my free Firefox browser. Ergo I can use that content any way I like (at least according to your logic). Not buying it.

What version of booerly are you suing? As I understand it, 1.000 is the LCD version. whereas the e-ink software update version is 1.010 and contains no LCD in name fields and filesizes are also larger.

I imagine it's less than ideal installing a font meant for LCD on an e-reader.

The LCD variant of Bookerly looked pretty much the same on the Kobo as Bookerly does on the PW3. (Ie, at smaller font size, very unpleasant without using Kobo features to increase font weight. No help for the PW3, a wretched failure on Amazon's part as far as I'm concerned. It's nice to see Kobo maintain the tech lead even after a hardware refresh from Amazon, that's entirely new.

The Fire-LCD version is 1.000, the software update version is 1.010 (no LCD in name fields). Filesizes are considerable different (new ones are larger). They've upped the x-height and the advance-width; overall the font is bolder, but in a subtle way. I've had both versions on my trusty old PW1 and imho the e-ink one has more contrast for sure.
I'm guessing people are using the LCD version. You can check by loading the ttf into notepad and seacrching for "lcd".

I am using e-ink version, it is subtly different and much more legible. LCD one needs optimization.
