It is both amusing and annoying that they are claiming that "everyone" has been clamouring for a 13.3" device. When the Ultimate Reader was proposed, some people though an 8 inch device would be better, but I don't recall a mass clamour for a 13.3" one. For most types of reading, that is just too large. The screen on the device in their video looks good, but the price at nearly £500 is far too high for me to consider it anyway.

Their page has just been slashdotted,
https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/...d-e-ink-reader So there is real chance they get those 60 sucke^H^H^H^H^Hbackers. Only then the fun begins. They will have to deliver. Let's get some popcorn ![]() |

I like the overall idea of something like this. But from skimming through the posts in this thread, GoodEReader's previous campaign was something of a failure. Somehow, that doesn't surprise me.
I think releasing this prototype with what looks like an almost stock-android is a mistake. Those animations and refreshes are like a psychedelic nightmare as the eInk screen races to catch up to the graphics display. There are a couple ways to handle this programmatically and to make the device feel a lot faster. PDF is the elephant in the room unfortunately, and like Flash, it is a widely-adopted, sub-optimal Adobe innovation. The scary thing about this is that Sony's DPT-1 is already out, and for a company like Sony, lowering their price from $799 to $650 would be nothing to them, and instantly put this effort out of business (if someone has already stated this, then I agree with you!). Thus, the "market research?" comment I saw earlier. I like the spirit of this but not the execution. |

Both are marketed as a 13.3" eReader and note taking / annotation device, and trying to break into a nice market already supplied by a major manufacturer with an implementation that's not as well refined (and is a Nettronix device, actually) is verrrrry risky. The major manufacturer can put you out of business in a day, happens all the time. The key innovation with a device like this is the software: It has to be novel, faster, and more use-able than the Sony, and this easily demonstrated to the technical/legal/medical consumer, who is the primary market for a device like this. Android apps run better on a tablet, and the broad consumer base wants color, animations, and speed, all things that are missing on eReader devices like this. App compatibility should be dropped and focus put on trimming the OS down to the bare minimum, and optimizing it, and working on "interim" animations to prevent the swirl of eInk refresh that accompanies zooming currently on this device. |
