It has recently been announced; that after long and careful deliberation, some bribes and back-handers of various sorts, we now have a new laddy at the door and sadly, to preserve time-honoured history, there will continue to be a payment on exit, but as a gentle nudge towards the continuing credit-whatsit there will now be a payment on entrance, suffice to say that a pat on the head and an un-zipped banana will suffice....Aack....

There was something indescribably magic about flight... no wonder Man had dreamed of it, aspired to it, and waxed poetically about it, for as long as he had existed: The mere idea of soaring with the birds, dancing among the clouds, and riding the wind currents, was as music to his soul; moving faster than it was possible for any living thing to move; unfettered from the ground, not seated inside a loud, rickety frame of wood and wire, or encapsulated inside a metal shell with screaming engines; able to go where you want, flying above the clouds or swooping through low branches; knowing that the mere effort was physically impossible; knowing that, at the very least, your eyes should be watering, and your lungs laboring to catch a breath, from the onrush of air... though, in fact, they are not; no question about it, flying was the best thing about his job—he just wished someone had gotten around to showing him the landing thing before he'd plowed head-first into the side of the Daily Planet building, and since Clark Kent was (naturally) nowhere to be found when he did it, landing him a manslaughter rap that would be exceedingly tough to beat...

Okay: I promise not to take an existing paragraph of mine and substitute the periods with colons, semicolons and dashes again. But I thought it worked...

Well, I am glad to see you're making progress with punctuation.

Just once, Kay thought as she finished off the bourbon that she often wished would actually dull her senses enough to allow her to do her job in a completely vegetative state for once, I'd like to get a John who isn't a doughy, sweaty momma's boy with so many issues that he can't even ask for what he really wants from the girl he just paid to lay down under his pasty-white fat a—and then Karl was awake again, startled out of his daydream by a dropped stapler somewhere a half-dozen cubicles away, shifting his eyes guiltily about in the hope that none of his officemates saw him daydreaming, and glad that even if they had, they had no idea what he had been daydreaming about...

It seemed completely incongruous to see Dawn standing there by the bed, wearing nothing but a smile and a sheer gown that draped over her right shoulder and completely exposed the rest of her, but somehow less than her usual gorgeous state thanks to the presence of the .44 in her left hand (the naked side... he had the presence of mind to notice that), smoke still wafting out of the barrel of the silencer—almost as incongruous as the hole in his gut, made by a bullet from a gun that no one should have been able to get close to him, because no one ever got that close to him except—which was why, as incongruous as it seemed, it also made perfect sense, and as the blackness slowly encroached on the edges of his vision, it left him at last with nothing but the strangely wistful expression of the one person capable of betraying him...

Robby couldn't help but reflect, again, on the frustration inherent in being a mechanical man: Having a brain capable of handling millions of independent calculations a second, and being trapped in a clumsy physical body that moved at a glacier's pace; his mind dancing around in a million directions in the time it took his metal eyelid to blink, something that some idiot had hardwired to be a ridiculously-slow process, not out of efficiency, but in order to avoid upsetting the overly-sensitive and glacially-slow organics around him; being able to calculate a thousand responses to a question in the space between syllables; it was maddening, and it often amazed him that he didn't simply reach into his chest and rip his power plant out, just to put himself out of his misery... but of course, even that would have taken him nine hundred thousand lifetimes, in his perception, to accomplish, so he really couldn't see the point.

"Fortune favours the brave; but unfortunately the brave were not in attendance when the lottery win was announced at the Gay Garlour's Club for Old Foggies and their Hangers-on, so the prize money was shared out amongst the meek, the pure and the handsome; well that excluded me and thee...." he muttered under his breath to the mangy dog slouching at his right heel, with a slice of a bacon butty between his sharp canine fangs....

Wendy had one of those smiles that used every feature of her innocent face to convey its happiness, and today Wendy was especially happy.

After the heated argument I had with my neighbour over his miserable son dating my darling daughter, I was completely beside myself -- now I had to figure out how to reattach all my appendages without the aid of emergency medical services.
