Typical Sony support. I got the email about the recall, and phoned them. The tech wasted 10 minutes of my time "troubleshooting" though I told him it had no ostensible problems. I had to connect via WiFi, the connect via 3G... I had to buy a free book via 3G... I had to open the book and turn through several pages... (didn't matter that I'd done all this before as part of using the reader). The support fellow then said "looks like it's fine, so send it back to us". (?!) He'd neglected to check the serial number against their db (though he asked for it before anything else). According to the db, it has to go back to Sony.

Over a week later and no replacement (though mine works fine so I'm not in a rush). He did say it would take 7-10 days. The guy took my credit card number to guarantee the return of the original unit. Faxing a copy of the receipt wasn't an option.

I haven't heard anything on my replacement unit either. For those who missed it, the tech specifically asked if I had any trouble with 3G on my demo unit. I don't but it suggest where the potential problem lies.

Just called for an update. They're having inventory problems but anticipate having new stock this week. They will overnight me a new unit when they get them in and are throwing in a $25 gift card for my trouble.

Just called for an update as well. They basically said they didn't really no when it would ship out. I was told on the previous call that mine was escalated for immediate shipment, but that certainly didn't happen. Oh well, I'm sure they'll ship it eventually.

Anyone who has a non "demo" unit... are the silver buttons at the bottom of the screen (page turn, options, etc.) made of silver painted plastic, or are they metal like the buttons on the PRS 900? The silver paint on the plastic buttons on my "demo" PRS 950 is already starting to chip, showing the grey plastic underneath. I have owned it for three weeks now.

I bought my 950 direct from Sony. The 950 buttons are not as nice as my 900 and was one of the first things I noticed.

The firmware rumor was based on a poster's conversation with a SonyStyle Store manager. [SARCASM] We all know how bright and informed those people are! [/SARCASM] I'll believe it when I see it...

I'm pretty sure it would be a promotion for a SonyStyle Store manager to become a Mall Cop!

BTW... now Sony is saying that they will have the replacement units to the owners within 8 to 10 BUSINESS days! I'm still waiting. Originally they said 3 to 5 days. Maybe next year? But mine is OK... just the cruddy plastic buttons are chipping off the cruddy silver paint.
