I bought my 950 in BB and today I spoke with Sony sales support. They told me that BB sold some units demos, but if the reader connect to the 3G network isn't a demo unit, demo units can't connect to the 3G network.

That's new data and would help explain some things. If that's accurate mine is not a demo since 3g works very well. I'm curious if any of the others who purchased through Best Buy have had 3G issues?

No issues here on either Wi-Fi or 3G side of things.

No problems on 3G with my Best Buy 950. However, I'm having difficulties with the Wi-Fi connection to my network.

Sometimes is difficult to connect wifi. I had problems with this because the reader has many options to connect wifi, but demos units don't have problems with wifi conecction.

WiFi issues on my unit are traceable to interference or weak signal strength, as I've reported elsewhere. When I turn on 3G I get a normal mode indicator and so on, but I have yet to use the 3g feature to get a book. I'll try that this weekend. I suspect that my 950 is a standard shelf-stock model, though.

I hadn't paid any attention to this thread but I OBVIOUSLY should have.

Sony has contacted me unexpectedly to say that my 950 bought at Best Buy was meant to be a demo unit. They want to send me a replacement unit.

My unit has worked very well in every respect.

They say the replacement unit is an upgrade so I'll go along with it.

Interesting!!

Has anyone received the replacement 950?

After reading petercreasey's post above, I registered my 950 with Sony. Almost immediately I received an e-mail indicating I too had received a demo unit. The rep indicated the problem would be with WIFI connectivity, but it seems to be working okay. They are sending me a brand new (he assured me not refurb) unit after which I am to return the one I bought locally.

Interesting indeed.

If you haven't registered your product with Sony, it may be worthwhile.

ditto on Ken's message...here is the message I received from Sony 10 minutes ago...

Thank you for your recent purchase of a Reader Daily EditionT (PRS-950). We appreciate your excitement about digital reading and know you want to get started with your new Reader right away. Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that you were inadvertently sold a unit that was meant for retail demonstration only and may not be fully functional. We would like for you to enjoy all the features the Reader Daily Edition has to offer as soon as possible so we will be sending you a brand new device. You will also receive a prepaid mailing label and ask that you send the demonstration unit back to us.

Please give us a call at your earliest convenience so we can send you a new device. You can reach us at 1-800-442-7669.

We apologize For any inconvenience this may cause And wish you happy reading.

Sincerely,
The Reader Team

I called the number and they will be sending one out, even though I have had no wi-fi issues.

Yay, Sony! Now if only they would pay as much attention to their ereader library software!

When you called Sony, did they tell you that they would call you in the 24 - 48 hours to set up sending the replacement?

Or did I get a run-around?

I just got the same thing as well. Was getting ready to call them again since I hadn't yet heard anything back from the replacement ticket they had already opened up for me.

Ahhhh! They left out the phone SIM card I bet. I never thought about that. The 900 would have been easy to open and insert one, but the 950 is not capable of being opened, so they have to send out replacements. Well that confirms my theory that there had to be some sort of non-firmware issue.

So sony tried to save a few pennies by leaving out a cheap SIM card but Best Buy did their usual dummer-than-dirt routine and in the end Sony winds up paying shipping costs for perhaps dozens, if not hundreds, of replacement units. I bet Sony wishes they hadn't tried to save a few pennies now! And perhaps next time they will remember to factor in the stupidity level of retailers.
