Calibre taking hours to convert PDF
Hi
I just fed calbre a 20mb pdf file to output in mobi format and its been 2 hrs and the wheel is still turning. Coverting to mobi fm epub takes a minute or so...is this a normal occurence or am I doing something wrong? I use the mac platform with )S 10.6.4 and the latest calibre version 0.7.19. Thanks |

There's probably something about that file that one of the processing rules doesn't like. Open a bug with the file. http://bugs.calibre-ebook.com/

I had calibre take over 5 hours to do one epub to epub conversion on a 2000 page book.
I also had a few other epub to epub conversions that took hours to complete. When I looked at the books that this happens to the css is broke up into three files with tens of thousands of lines in each. All chock full of Microsoft html junk. I had a couple that had over 10,000 lines in the css just for Font-face stuff. All this font face garbage caused calibre not to be able to split a file into small enough chunks and failed to convert. I deleted the font face stuff and was successful the second try. Still took forever. I can't blame calibre for taking forever on these internally bloated files. Most every other epub to epub conversion takes less then 30 seconds. Externally the books looked fine before and after conversion. |

I know exactly what you're talking about with Microsoft inserted cruft. However for pdf this wouldn't be a problem, the markup returned by pdftohtml is really simplistic.
I guess this partially depends on the type of pdf - at 20 megs I'm assuming it's images with text underneath. That should process quickly. If it actually is 20 megs of text then it may indeed take Calibre a while to process it... |
