Hello out there!

Hi everyone, I've been creepy-lurking for a while now, gleaning useful bits of info here and there, and enjoying that immensely, but I suppose it's time now to actually pop out and say hello!

I guess basics are... I'm a 23 year old lady (... wait, I am no lady) living in Kentucky. Also, I ramble!

Well, I'm very new to eBooks and eBook readers, although ever since the Kindle came out, I eyed it lustily, but alas, I was but a poor college student then, and they were so very expensive. (Now I'm a poor post-college student... much better! ) Anyway, it kinda fell to the wayside, and I don't even know exactly how, but I stumbled across something about the B&N Nook about 2 months ago, and the price had just dropped and a wi-fi only version was released, so I decided to splurge, and I really can't see myself going back.

I do still read a few paper books, but mostly just ones I can't find in ebook form, and then, I'll just check them out of the library. I've never been a very acquisitive person in general, even with books, as much as I love them. I digress... I do find I prefer to read on my nook, which doesn't really surprise me, as I'm a bit of a gadget-geek as well as a reading-geek. I've really enjoyed learning as much as I can about formats and DRM issues and Calibre and free ebooks and alll that good stuff. I read a bit of everything, I was reading only nonfiction for quite a bit about varied things, but right now I'm really on a fantasy binge.

I guess that wraps things up!

Hi bridgetostars, welcome to MR!

Yeah, I don't buy/read p-books anymore if I can help it. Don't get me started about the quality of the materials that p-book publishers use. Did you ever buy a p-book and they were trying to save a penny so they printed right down almost to the binding so you could hardly read it without cracking the spine open? Gosh.

I like your avatar--anything that you're willing to share about it's significance?

Hey everyone! Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah, rlparker, another part of the reason I switched to ebooks was because if I ever had any money to spend on books, which was rare, it was invariably a mass-market paperback. I have no qualms about spine breaking, etc. so invariably they look like crap when I'm done with them, and it really bugs me that the paper quality is so poor compared to more expensive versions (silly, I know, but there it is). I'd never noticed really why it was that I was cracking the spines, but now that I flip through a few, I can blame it on the publishers! Haha. I really like the idea of having a more-permanent, less-mess-up-able copy, as long as I back up my data.

Thanks about my avatar. It's just a pattern I grabbed from a site [http://everydayicons.jp/patterns.html] that I liked the looks up. No deeper meaning, really! I love patterns, and kinda stockpile awesome looking ones when I find them.
