Maybe change the title to New Zealand... Oz normally stands for Australia...
I hope, too, that everyone is well in Christchurch. |

Thanks for your kind thoughts, everyone. It wasn't in my part of NZ, but we're following the news closely, as we have friends in Christchurch.
Extensive property damage, including collapsed buildings, broken water pipes and sewer pipes, but just two serious injuries reported so far. Very scary to be in, I'm sure. Two Radio NZ reporters said they were both in the 1989 San Fransisco quake, and this one felt much worse. |

It was noticed that a large quake was occurring somewhere because the seismometer in our house started to record it ....
Hope everyone in S. Island is fine and well .... |

New Zealanders are tough. I hope they are coping as well as I think they will. Sending alll our friends in NZ some good vibes to help them clean up the mess.

Thanks folks. Luckily there has been no loss of life, and only two serious injuries, probably due to the time the quake occurred.
The epicenter of the quake was about 40km (25 miles) from my home. It was a very strong quake, and not a fun way to wake up at 4.35am! There is quite a lot of damage, but luckily the majority (95%) of residential property (including mine) is ok. The aftershocks are still going on, and even for someone who has grown up with quakes I'm getting a bit sick of it. Thanks again for your thoughts! ![]() |

I was actually reading my kindle when it happened and didn't notice it. Everyone else in Wellington seemed to though.

Once you've lived in Wellington long enough you learn to block the shakes out.
I'm getting worried though, we had an 8? in Fiordland last year, 7.4 in Chch now, I reckon Wellingtons big one must be on the way. |

don't worry overly much, I'll bet there's a similar state of affairs in Japan and California (to mention 2 out of hundreds) - some day - don't know when - a biggie's on its way ..... |
