I have given up on Sony - Kindle 3 ordered

After having waited for two years for Sony to bring their firmware up to date, I have now pre-ordered a Kindle 3 with Amazon.

I must admit that I shall probably be a little sad to say good-bye to my trusted 505. I just loved the build quality. I had hoped that Sony would provide better support for PDFs and justified ePubs, but my patience finally ran out.

I can understand, to a certain degree, the amount of amazon-bashing going on here as well as outside of this forum, but I believe there are few decent alternatives, particularly, if you are living Downunder.

I shall miss this thread and all the good people with their expert advice.

Totally understand although i love my PRS-900.

Why the heck does Sony ignore Customer demands and market demands ?
Amazon may ignore customers too but they react faster to market demands.

Kindle DX3 to be announced like (DX2 + K3 software update) and i'm coming.
Well, maybe. There's this ePub support thing...

I've been using a Sony 505 for two years now, and I still love it. I'm really happy to see a Graphite version of the Kindle, though (hated the white color), and the new price is really tempting.. as are the prices of Kindle books. I can't afford a new Kindle right now, but I'll probably go for one in a couple of months if Sony or someone else doesn't come out with an equally appealing product (new Pearl e-ink screen and epub support all in one would be nice). I wish Sony would bring out a model built like the 505, with unicode font support built in, new screen. I could live with or without the wifi to be honest, but I think it's necessary now with the Kindle so dominant.

Still, the K3 is missing ePubs. I know I can convert my ePubs to Mobi via Calibre, but I like my Sony touch. I don't really need Wi Fi or 3G, but pearl screen is tempting. Not to mention the price. As my PRS-600 is still new, I can wait, but Sony would be better to react promptly.

I'm pretty much in the same camp, however it's gonna take a (another) major drop-of-the-ball by Sony to get me to switch to Kindle. If the next big Sony is another 700/900 touchscreen glare in my face clone than I'm done. If it's the Super-505 many of us have been dreaming of, than I'm back on board. When I wanted an ereader in the beginning, the Kindle was not availiable in Canada. The Sony was. That's what originally bought my product loyalty. Don't forsake us Sony, we want an improved 505!

So what would we want in our dream 510?

- bigger internal memory
- faster post-update scanning
- multi-level indexing (letter -> author name -> author's books)
- multi-level collections (collections of collections)
- improved right-side page turn buttons
- more font face/size choices
- justified epubs (I don't care, but a lot of people do)
- pdf handling that doesn't utterly suck (zoom would be nice)

I know Sony isn't going to do it ... we plain-vanilla ebook reader folks have been kicked to the curb ... but it's kind of fun to dream. So what else should your hypothetical 510 have?

the k3 has the new pearl screen? that might be mighty tempting, even considering the fact I *just* bought my Sony Touch edition this past week and received it two days ago. I can live with the glare because I want the touch-screen for easy annotations of a book I'm proofreading (I literally just want to blow through the reading and circle errors I find, to correct them in word later. I don't need to make bona-fide annotations most of the time)...but for pleasure reading, this might be a nice sidekick.

Faster page turns and interaction in general. I was surprised how slow my 505 felt compared to my Opus and K2 when I fired it up a couple weeks ago.

Screw it, I put in for a return of my 600 to overstock.com and I'm going to hop on the preorder bandwagon.

This is the big one for me. I work with technical documents, architectural and structural drawings every day. I use a LOT of paper. I would love to have an efficient reader that I can actually utilize for more than pleasure reading.
I don't want backlit. I don't need to draw on them. I don't need to annotate them. I just need to reference them. PDF's are the industry standard for these drawings, and as such, it's either print them out, or use your computer. I print them out. Reading on my computer screen gives me a pounding headache. The first company that can master the PDF on a portable reader that isn't a tablet is going to win in my opinion. Lets go Team Sony.

Sony really is going to have to pull something special out of the bag now. I guess this is when we see how committed they are to the market.

I've got an iPad so my 600 was going on eBay anyway, but even if I didn't I would be ordering a kindle right now. In fact at that price, I might buy one anyway.

I'll keep my 505, but I'm pre-ordering the new kindle. I'm always envious of the lower prices compared to Sony, and I've always hated the Sony website. I figure at $139, I'll save in the long run by buying kindle books.

The more I think about it, the more Sony just p*sses me off.

The justification problems should have been sorted within weeks of the issue being reported. There is just no good reason for it still not being fixed. Sony appears to have released it and then abandoned it.

I've owned multiple Sony readers, going right back to the Japanese Librie. This will be the last one that I own.

This is the same reason why the stock market is so irrational. When you have an irrational exuberant by the mass, it is easy to get caught up in the fever and the stampede. People rushing to buy as if if they don't buy now they will be left behind.
