What format is most of your movie library in?

As a comparison to the current situation of paper books giving way to electronic books, I think observing how quickly our libraries of other media have transfered to newer formats offers some insight into how quickly the paper to ebook shift is likely to occur.

Heck, someone has most of their movies on film reels? I actually thought Blu-Ray would give DVDs a close fight here. I'm guessing the demographic on this forum is slightly older perhaps.

I'm surprised that no-one has voted for Blu-Ray yet!

Be patient; only 9 people have voted so far. Besides, Blu-Ray is still pretty new and expensive.

I would also think that the format people have purchased the most in the last few years may be different to the format that still makes up the majority of their collection.

But is it possible that Blu Ray occupies a disproportionate amount of shelf space compared to its sales (like salads at McDonalds for example) or has it perhaps come to late and digital transfers will dominate the future for movies.

I don't see someone running out to replace an existing DVD collection with Blu-Ray. Many older movies aren't even available on Blu-Ray.

Mpeg is giving a strong showing, as I would consider it a relatively new phenomenon to be able to download most of your movies due to the cost of the bandwidth (In NZ it has been horrendous). Although TIVO etc would constitute a significant part of peoples libraries today.

I spend more time on my pc & listening to music than I do watching tv. I have a 130lb 32inch CRT boat anchor of a perfectly good Sony TV, with the one of the first multiformat Pioneer dvd players.

I was NOT about to get caught up in the BR/HD format war & I'm not going to spend even more money replacing all of my std DVDs that look just fine on my tv.

This gear cost too much damn money to be constantly replacing it with the latest & greatest for all of a year or less!

At my peak of DVD buying in the early years of the format, I had maybe between 200 and 300 of them (many of which have been given away or resold, back when used DVDs were still valuable.) Now, I probably have under 200 (with box sets counted as one.) But that number pales in comparison to what I have in Xvid/Divx files-- a 25 mb/s connection means a near-DVD quality 700 MB Divx in less than 4 minutes.

I have heard that theory before and it does have merit. Time will tell.

The failure of recording and publishing companies to come to terms with modern technology is quite sad and an opportunity missed I believe.

I have also begun to download my movies and the only reason is convenience, I would happily pay for them but no one will supply in a practical manner. They could increase viewership substantially and make millions on the release of films online but they refuse. A brief ad could comfortably be inserted at the beginning without bothering people instead they tend to waste that space for lectures on the DVD format at least.

I can only assuage my consience by having payed for subscription tv for almost all of the movies I have downloaded.

To be honest, these days most of my movies are in Netflix format. I haven't watched one of my own DVD movies in a year or two. I have bought and watched a few non-fiction DVDs, but for movies, I don't bother buying them anymore.

Of course, we don't get Netflix in NZ.

Maybe we need to put some signs outside the offices of the movie and publishing companies: "Don't forget Aus & NZ"
