Dragon Space: New SF Omnibus from Jeffrey A. Carver

Hi folks -- I'm pleased to report a new book up for sale this weekend! It's Dragon Space: A Star Rigger Omnibus. It's a one-volume combo of two books from my Star Rigger series: Dragons in the Stars and Dragon Rigger, originally published in print by Tor and later released as ebooks by E-reads. This is the first time they've ever been combined into one low-priced volume, complete with a lovely map by Ellisa Mitchell, from the Tor hardcover. With the cooperation of E-reads, I've released this omnibus under my own Starstream Publications imprint. Here's what it looks like.

As the illustration suggests, it's science fiction with strong overtones of fantasy. Yes, there are dragons in interstellar space! It's not hard SF, but is character oriented with a strong female protagonist, and should appeal to both dragon lovers and science fiction fans.

It's available right now at Kindle and Smashwords, and will be available in the Nook store as soon as it finishes "processing." DRM-free. Over the next few weeks, it should start showing up at Sony, Apple, Kobo, and Diesel.

Right now, it's priced at $5.99 for the two novels as an introductory special. I hope you'll take a look!

Hi Jeffrey,

Not sure if there was a typo but this is listed in Smashwords at $6.99. Amazon is showing $5.99 as per your posting.

Regards

Yoicks! You're right! It's $5.99 now.

(I'd forgotten to go back and change it. I was originally going to do a coupon, but then got busy.)

Thanks for the correction!

I bought your Eternity's End some time ago to sample the universe you've created but haven't got around to reading it yet. However, I've put this omnibus on my wish list at Smashwords and will tempt myself with it over the next week or so and see if I end up purchasing it anyway.

Heh! I know how that goes. Just FYI, the dragon books are set earlier in the future history than Eternity's End. Doesn't particularly matter, though, unless you're compulsive about that sort of thing. Other than sharing a common background, the stories are quite separate.

Glad to hear its out in an Combo-Ed, sometimes that is the only way to keep track of the next in line of a series. Any others coming out that way?

That makes sense. After going through all the work of creating the world in which a story is set why not use it for more than one story rather than having to recreate everything from scratch every time.

Well, I have an omnibus of the first three books of The Chaos Chronicles. (Called, oddly enough, The Chaos Chronicles: Books 1-3.) I couldn't include the fourth, Sunborn, because that's published in ebook by Tor, as will be books 5-6, if I live long enough to finish them. The Chaos omnibus is by far my best selling ebook. Dragon Space has been slow out of the gate, so far.

Perhaps someday I'll do an omnibus of From a Changeling Star and Down the Stream of Stars. They're about the only other books I have that are order-dependent. I could bundle the other Star Rigger books, I suppose (Panglor, Star Rigger's Way, Eternity's End, Seas of Ernathe). But right now, I need a little breather.

BTW--slightly off topic--I've just uploaded a corrected version of Eternity's End to Nook, Amazon, and Smashwords. I discovered a dismaying number of formatting errors (mostly dropped italics) that had gotten by me in the original release. If anyone has bought Eternity's End and has trouble downloading a corrected version, please let me know.

That's a perfectly logical way to look at it. Actually, though, it's not nearly so calculated. Mostly, it's just that I think of new stories spinning off from something I wrote in an earlier book. The dragon books, for example, were suggested to me by a single throwaway line I'd put in Star Rigger's Way--a rigger in a space bar boasting about "dueling dragons on the Aeregian route." That line came back to me when I was thinking of writing a story for an Orson Scott Card anthology about dragons. And the short story suggested the first novel. Which in turn suggested the second novel.

So, with all the combined editions out there now, when are you going to collect all your short stories and get them out in a volume? "Love Rogo," alone would be a forth of a book. Trying to collect all those bits and pieces could be difficult, I guess, but it would be great to see that one come out.

Funny you should mention that--and thanks for remembering "Love Rogo"! I've got printouts of them all stacked here near my computer. My kids were supposed to pitch in and retype them for me. (All those not yet available online were pre-computer.) Retyping seemed as if it would be faster than scanning and correcting. But that project hasn't gotten very far. I do have a sticky note on my computer desktop to remind me of it, though.

I know, I know! But when we did the free version, we weren't following the SW style guide, which calls (properly, I think) for simple and consistent Word styles. I don't even know exactly when or how it happened--but at some point, in my cleaning up the Word styles for the more recent SW/Kindle/Nook editions, a whole lot of italics (especially the rigger communication lines) got reverted to Roman and I didn't catch it. Precisely because I knew we'd been through the file so carefully, I didn't do a page-by-page recheck.

I only discovered it when I was working on the dragons omnibus, and there I saw it in time to realize I had to go through it page-by-page. The RTFs that formed the basis of the E-reads editions turned out to have a lot of really screwy Word styles in them. We weren't even checking for that, at the time. It didn't bite me until I did the SW prep. And that made me go back and look at Eternity's End, and I just about screamed.

Major pain.
