The weather outside is frightful, but Calibre is so delightful..

(Just another in-praise-of thread)

This weekend dreadful weather forced everyone indoors. (Yes.. 45 degrees and a smattering of rain is dreadful for Los Angeles).

I decided to tackle a chore I had been putting off for months: replacing the hard drive in my aged-but-beloved desktop. It was two days of "Where is that registration code!?!" and "Oh crap - I did not write down my account for that website" (including MobileRead - and Yahoo Mail was putting my frantic password requests in the Spam folder.)

Eventually I got around to copying over the \My Documents directory. There was a sub-folder \Calibre Library under it. I almost skipped copying it but decided what the heck.

I was pretty frazzled from all the moving in/around/upgrading nearly every program so I approached the new version of Calibre with some trepidation. But the setup was a few simple questions and it seemed to be happy finding the old Library directory. I decided to test things by importing some ePub books I have been letting build up in a directory. I discovered the new (ok, new-to-me) series-numbering fields so I defined series for Harry Potter, Stephanie Plumb, Terry Pratchett, etc. It worked great.

I imported over a hundred books and I spent time editing the MetaData letting Calibre do most of the work. It was a quiet and satisfying evening putting my collection together and using Calibre to organize things. I went to bed a lot calmer than when I started. The next day I tackled hooking my Sony 505 to the computer fearing needing more drivers/upgrades, but it was simple and un-eventful.

Thank you for this wonderful program!

Ah for the balmy days of winter in LA (I used to live in Pasadena). Glad calibre lowered the stress levels in your life
