The title isn't really news. People have pointed out elsewhere that some Amazon ebooks are available as "Simultaneous Device Usage: Unlimited". If the author is surprised it's because he didn't research it :-p.

From my POV the real news is that it is now possible to buy ebooks by Cory Doctorow without DRM. Previously it was impossible to recompense him for his free online downloads without making publishers think that you are willing to tolerate DRM'd products. (Or that you want to dispose of chunks of wood pulp ;-)).

The article is also a bit disingenous, in that the language implies Amazon had to be "persuaded" to sell the book without DRM. In the absence of any details, I don't really believe that.

Amazon has alowed DRM free ebooks for quite a while. Their submission processes were misaligned and you had to jump through hoops but they eventually cleared it up. Since late last year, if I remember correctly.
Big flap at Teleread over it, actually.

No. I might have misremembered the other thread discussing this. I thought the common thing was to have DRM but no limit on the number of devices when it was marked this way.

Not sure why he is confused about Audible working differently from Amazon, one is a subscription service so it isn't surprising that they don't work exactly the same.

The article was news for me. I knew that Amazon allowed DRM-free in some cases, but what I did NOT know that Apple was opposed to DRM-free ebooks. I distinctly remember Jobs talking about how bad DRM for music was in the past. Enlighten me if I'm wrong, can you publish drm-free ebooks to the ibook store. I have no way of knowing, I currently can't get past the guards at the walled garden.
