![]() ![]() Hello, I tried to convert an ebook from html to epub for my SONY PRS-600. However, instead of single quotes, I have question marks. Q.m. appear also sometimes even if there is no single quote in the original text (OK I think I'll fix it by replacing — by -). In Calibre, I see single quotes correctly, but not on my reader. What to do? Thanks. P.S. It seems fine now after replacing replacing "—" by " - ". Maybe it'll help somebody else. Last edited by mikij; 07-13-2010 at 08:28 PM. |

On my WinXP I've been entering single and double curly quote in Sigil using Alt+0145 for ‘ and Alt+0146 for ’, double quotes (an em-dash is Alt+0151, or you can put "—" in the code view) I've done that with some PDFs converted to epub using Calibre (which conversions were probably done sloppily because I have yet to read the manual.)

I use trial and error when specifying the encoding, I start with calibre's default (which works fine for me most of the time). If I run into a problem I try the below character encodings one at a time. cp1252 cp1251 latin1 utf-8 ascii This has to be specified before adding the html book to calibre. The problem you're seeing is before conversion, it happens when the html book is added to calibre. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 07-14-2010 at 02:31 AM. |

I got a couple of Eiji Yoshikawa's books in English, but they contain several Japanese characters , like special "o" in shōgun. They are also replaced by a question mark. Anybody have an idea which character set should I use to see these characters correctly on my Sony? In Calibre view and in HTML (ePub), they are correct.
Thanks, Mike |

The SONY probably doesn't have the fonts needed to display those characters. Either hack your sony to install needed fonts or use the extra css to point to appropriate font files on the sony. Search these forums for instructions on how to do either.
