Need some help deciding between the 5" and 6" Astak

Well I made a big misteak this weekend. I visited my 10 yr old daughter for her birthday and had loaded up a couple of books so she could try out my PP. Last time I saw her she decided that she liked it but I didn't have anything that was ok for her to read. She got to read with it for about 4 hours and loved it. I made a deal with her that if she saved up half the money for one I would spring for the other half.

Now my question is witch do you guys thing would be better for a 10 yr old the 5" or 6". I'm leaning more to getting here the 5 since she can pick the colors.

I would agree with the 5" because of the colors.

The Jog wheel vs Buttons is the major difference.
A 10 yr old's eye sight probably won't notice the screen size difference.

That said.
10yr old. How careful is she with stuff?
E-ink is not cheap... any brand.

I hadn't even thought about the jog wheel.

She is pretty careful with her electronic stuff. I tried to get them used to that at an early age.

I would definitely go with the 5". There are no available statistics, but my impression is that devices with 5" screens break less often that the typical 6". Both EZ Readers are well made, with good screen support and an included cover, but I would still give the nod to the 5".

I would go for a reader that has a dictionary support (e.g. nook)

Since someone just posted a thread on how to get dictionary support on the Pocket Pro, I would say that is less of an issue all of a sudden. My vote would be for a Pocket Pro given Wallcraft's opinion of the sturdiness factor and that of the available today Astak choices the PP is faster. Another thing to consider that I would not want to have to explain to a child that she cannot just have all the books she sees if she goes into the store by accident since the Nook makes that so easy to do and probably tempting. Since wifi is so available now I do not see the wifi only unit as being much different than the 3G. If the unit must be loaded by SD card or USB cable, it is simply not an issue and makes content easy for parents to monitor. Of course all the pretty color choices as originally stated by the Dad add a cool factor and give the child the involvement factor of making part of the choice. And of course since Dad is giving the unit he will likely be providing most or all of the technical support and since he has a Pocket Pro he already knows how to use it, update firmware, etc without additional reading or effort on his part.

Dear kdf:

A ten year old's hands are not adult sized but they have great eyesite and they love colors! They also enjoy Text-To-Speech and they idealize MP3 songs. They also share a lot of files and some of those files may be in different formats and the PP has 20 formats on it! They also use their devices often and that means SD card slot and a user-replaceable battery may help.

The Pocket PRO fits the bill exactly. The jog (SCROLL) wheel alone makes it ideal for her hand in my opinion.

Now... some major news!! We are going to keep selling the Pocket PRO of course... but the factory will not support colors in the future. In about 2 months there may be NOTHING but Black PP and White PP! Already we are out of Metallic Purple!!

Order before July 5, 2010, and she gets a 2GB SD card, 500 free classics pre-loaded, and a free download of "The Girl with the Dragon Taatoo" (the runaway bestseller)!

I am not trying to rush your purchase. I am not that way. But I do not want you to miss out on the sale or the colors.

I've noticed the purple has been out of stock for quite some time. I'm so glad I ordered mine when I did!

Save for having to start a new thread.

I was having a discussion today with someone over the new V3+ and the existing V5, and we discussed the question, if someone asked for your recommendations which one would you suggest?

The new 6" (EZReader Plus) is about to be released at a price that is only marginally higher than the 5". Both come with 400mhz processor and Epson controller and offer the same functionality.

The difference realised is;
- The 5" has 32mb SDRAM vs 64mb of the 6", would this make much of a difference to the average user?
- The 5" screen is 200ppi yet the 6" is 167ppi, can this difference be noticed in clarity?
- Scroll wheel vs volume buttons on the side.

So I ask, which one and why would you recommend to a new person wanting an ereader? I have a 5" and absolutely love it, but now that the 6" is on par hardware wise, is the 6" now the preferred/recommended?

The amount of RAM makes a difference in how sophisticated a program can be run since the OS, application, and in memory part of a document have to share that RAM. With the current firmware it probably does not make much difference to most users.

I have both the 5" and the 6" of the current versions, and the 6" is much easier on the eyes, but the 5" is more easily portable.

I do not use either the jog dial on the 5" or the up/down buttons on the 6" enough to make either one preferable. The firmware can accomplish most of the same tasks with either setup, depending up how they are programmed.

At nearly equivalent prices the 6" wins hands down im my book.

There are more differences than that. The 5" supports TTS and the 6" has 16 gray scale levels.

After getting used to the scroll wheel for so long I couldn't go to buttons. Besides, I rather have 200 ppi then have a reduced amount just for 1 inch more screen real estate.

Apparently the Eco Reader (Aussie branded V3+) supports TTS, so with the hardware upgrade now comes the ability to support TTS (still robotic I believe).

The 16 levels would not look different to 8 levels when reading, it only effects the displaying of images (am I correct in thinking this??).

Good to know about the ECO Reader. Wonder how they convinced Jinke. Astak claims to have asked for this but couldn't get it. Perhaps they can if ECO Reader can get it.

Yes, 16 effects images but there are images in books as well. You only need the original 4 level gray if you only want text.
