Nook\PRS-505 vs PRS-900 Screen

While I already purchased the Nook, I noticed that my local Best Buy had the PRS-900 for $249.99, including an extra case. That would make it basically as cheap as the Nook with a case I had to buy.

Since my original reader was a prs-505, which I really liked, I bought the 900, hoping that the touch layer on the screen isn't as bad as people say. Well, unfortunately to my eyes there is no comparison between Nook/PRS-505 and the 900 - the 900 is muddy and murky, especially in lower light. To be honest, I was a bit shocked how bad it was. Now I understand why the Nooks on the display at Best Buy were fully operational, but the Sonys were mockups. It's really too bad, as the rest of the package is nice, especially the easy word lookup, and the longer screen...

I really hope that Sony comes out with a solution to the touch layer, and makes a true successor to the 505, with a 7" screen.

Unless you've already returned your PRS-900, you could try and change the font on it. I found the default font a bit hard to read in some lighting conditions, and changed the font to the bold version of another font (whose name slips my mind at the moment). You can find directions on how to change the font in this thread.

By making the font a bit bolder I found that it was much easier to read on it and no longer have any problems with it. The PRS-900 is the only e-reader I've ever used though, so I can't say how it compares with other e-readers.

Why not continue to use the 505?

Well, I like built-in 3g for one, dictionary, good annotatins, as well as faster operation of the new units... The epub reformating on 505 takes forever. Not to mention that I like new gadgets

That's ok, I'm not the quiet type about my likes and dislikes

505 really is a very nice device, just getting a little old...

I loved my 505 but my 900 is a keeper. The double-tap dictionary lookup is great and so is the touch interface in general (as long as I keep my finger clean, lol). Yeah, I could wish for a higher contrast screen. It'll come eventually.

And there's my problem with touch screens (well, one of them): One of my primary reading times is while eating, and I eat a lot of finger food, especially BBQ sandwiches. And the Cheetos ... let's not even go there. Touch screens are just too vulnerable to external factors.

When they make a touch screen that can withstand Cheeto crumbs and Sweet Baby Ray's, I'll think about it. Until then, I'm happy with my 505.
