I returned my sony 600. What now?
I loved everything about my Sony Touch, except for the glare on the screen and reduction in sharpness of the text due to the touch screen. For a full 30 days I tried to get past it, but I just couldn't. I don't care about bells and whistles. I care most about easy to read text and fast page turns. I don't reread books, so I don't care about storage. I like to read before bed, so I need to be able to easily hold it in one hand. I don't want to be restricted to kindle books only. I was thinking about getting the Sony 300, but I read fast and was concerned about the smaller screen. I was also considering Kobo, but I have read that the page turns are slow. The Nook seems to meet most of my needs, but I was afraid it might be heavy for one hand. Am I wrong about these? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the 300 paginates the same as those with a bigger screen. So having a smaller screen doesn't make a difference then. Don't quote me on that though.

I own the nook and have no problem reading it with one hand every morning on the subway for my commute. And I have a cover.
Without the cover it weighs 11oz's it's pretty light. To put it in everyday terms. It weighs as much as a 300 page trade paperback. It's that light. I highly recommend it. It is just a joy, all around. |

I currently own a Nook, PRS-300 and PRS-600. Eventually I'll narrow down to one device (see my signature)
![]() The 300 really is a joy to use - it's perfect for one hand, either hand. I don't notice any issues with fast reading, and the screen is sharp and beautiful. My only complaint IS the storage size, since I am a re-reader with many ebooks to organize and store. I really wish the 300 had a SD card slot. The page refresh is a touch slower than the 600, but I get into a rhytym of hitting the page forward button at about the second last line, and I'm fine. The Nook is also fabulous for one-hand use with the buttons. I can read one-handed with it for a shorter period of time (15-20 min), but my wrists and elbow get fatigued if I use it too long. I have partially solved that problem with the Industriell easel cover, although it doesn't balance on the bed all that well. And I'm still searching for a decent book light that doesn't blind me (Sony really has spoiled me with their great light case for the PRS-600). Office Max has the PRS-300 on open display so you can pick it up and move it around, and B&N has Nook out. Both are tethered, but you still get a feel for their ergonomics. |

The PocketBook 301+ is half the weight of a Nook and you can definitely hold it in one hand. Page turns are pretty quick, too. It doesn't have lots of bells and whistles, either...

But the placement of the page turn button on PocketBook 301+ might be an issue. The Cybook gen3 use the same case design, and I was perpetually annoyed by it during the time I had it. It was impossible for me to hold one-handed and use it comfortably. Apart form that, it is light and that's important for comfort.

I have the PRS600 and a Kobo...much prefer the Sony Touch but the Kobo is certainly nice to read and lighter. I find the page turning is fast enough. The only thing I don't like - because of the quickness of the Sony - is the time it takes to load a book when you first turn it on.

I was in your same situation and I bought a Kindle.
I am very happy with it. I am not confined to Amazon books, I use Calibre to convert books to Kindle format. |

If so, you should check out BeBook Neo/Onyx Boox. Similar featureset to Sony 600, less glare due to WACOM tablet, similar price level. And it does ePUB as well, so you even can use the Sony books (if you have bought some). If you're not into touchscreens anymore, nook certainly is a very good choice, especially after the significant price reduction. BTW: Sony 900 has less glare than Sony 600, may be worth checking out as well (one of my personal favorites). |

To give you some idea: I'd say, Sony 900 is exactly in the middle between Sony 505, nook and the likes and Sony 600. It definitely still has glare. But in my opinion it's perfectly acceptable. And Sony 900 has lots of advantages: I find the cover perfect. It's integrated directly in the unit. It only covers the screen, not the back (which simply is the back of the reader). In general, I find Sony 900 one of the most beautifully designed units. And I love the form factor. Small enough to still rest comfortable in a single hand, but still bigger than your average reader. |

Thank you so much for all of the suggestions so far. I'll take a look at the pocketbook, bebook and sony 900 as well. So the 5 inch screen isn't frustrating compared to the 6 inch? There is a 505 on my local craigslist, but it seems the price is inflated. Are there any other 6 inch readers I should look into?

My wife and I have the SONY PRS-600 and the B&N nook (original with 3G) in the house. We mostly use them for library books to read in bed - and so for us that's the key to our strong preference. The nook beats the PRS-600 "hands down" in that the SONY has a firmware defect that prevents you from using BOTH epub and pdf library books at the same time. They have a support link that basically tells you to avoid trying (see below)
I also think the nook's screen is more "paper white" than the SONY and therefore incrementally better contrast, especially in lower light situations. The nook has since dropped price a few times and recently B&N has introduced a new model without 3G feature. Unless you need to buy books on the road (via AT&T 3G) when you are nowhere near a wifi connection (which all nooks still include anyhow), then the current non-3G nook would be my first choice. In fact, if we could do it over again, we'd return both of our current readers for a pair of (non-3G) nooks. Happy hunting. SONY link: http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/d...nalId=C1008686 |
