				Hello from Ohio

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum so thought I would tell you about myself. I am 62 and live in rural Ohio, outside of Columbus with my husband and as of this morning 3 cats and one dog. We live in Texas in the winter. We go there to get away from the horrible Ohio weather. It never gets below 50 there, we are just north of Brownsville the fishing is usually real good and we have made many friends at the park we stay in. I have a question for you all. If money was no object and you wanted to buy a new device would you go with the Sony Daily or a Kindle? The reason for my question is, my wonderful husband is into trap shooting and has bought 3 new guns since April, so he asked me the other day if there wasn't something I would like. I started looking around and found these things, I think they are great, I had a stroke 2 years ago and it effected my sight, so I can only read large print books, which are really hard to find and very expensive when you do find them. I had a Sony reader in my hands last nite at Best Buy and thought it was kind of small, they didn' t have a daily, but the print was large enough for me to read. Sorry this is so long, hope someone out there can help me decide. Am going to the Sony store this afternoon. Thanks again Vicki |

Hello, and welcome to mobileread I cannot possibly comment, as I have neither the Sony nor the Kindle, but someone will be along shortly who may be able to help. In the meantime, why not pop into the Wiki (see link in my signature) and browse the two units and weigh up the pros & cons - there is, also, a Which one should I buy forum , that might help .... |

Hi Vicki and welcome to MR. I've got the daily edition and love it!! I don't have a kindle so I can't really compare the two, the link Geoff gave you will help, and there is also a nice comparison matrix here as well. I got the Sony for the touch screen and the fact that it let me read more types of books from a greater number of sources. I don't have any complaints except that the Sony library software is not really good but there are nice alternatives to it like Calibre. If you have and specific questions feel to ask, there is also the Sony specific forum as well. What do you mean "horrible Ohio weather", do you get that down in sunny Columbus? Columbus is where us people from Cleveland go for vacation |

Hi Vicki and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 for over two and a half years now and really like it. And, with the Sony, you can borrow eBooks from a lot of public libraries.

Hi, Vicki, from another Central Ohio resident. If money is truly no object, would you consider something even larger than the Daily or the Kindle 2? I love my Sony, but if I knew I was going to be reading large-print and there was a gadget large enough to show me more words on a page (that wasn't too heavy), I'd be tempted to lean that way. There's the Kindle DX*, which has a larger screen. And there's a couple of IRex versions out there that are larger, but I've never seen them. And I can't believe I'm actually bringing this up (I'm not an Apple fan), but there's also the iPad. The Sony does have the advantage right now of being the only one of those that will allow you to read library books on it. Barnes & Noble's Nook will too - but so far as I know, the largest reader they have has the same 6" screen as the Kindle 2 or Sony Touch. But that is another option. **Just read on another thread that the newest Kindle DX Graphite (the dark grey/black one) has the newest eInk screen, which has a 50% better contrast that the current eInk screens. So you get the 9.7 inch screen and even sharper contrast... Last edited by FizzyWater; 07-02-2010 at 08:07 PM. Reason: reading about the new Kindle DX graphite on another thread |

Hya Vicki. Good to have your company. I'm your age and, like you, my eyes ain't what they used to be. I can get by with regular text with my specs, but the facility to increase font size is a huge bones and makes reading twice the fun. Really, you don't need to spend a packet. There are some fine devices at reasonable prices out there that will suit you, and, being in the US, there are no geographical restrictions at the major ebook stores to fuss over. I'm very happy with my Sony, but it's a matter of horses for courses, so do check out the *Which One Should I Buy?' forum before making a choice. Please let us know how you get along. Good luck, best wishes and happy reading. Neil

				I Got It

After much reading and pondering went to the Sony store last Friday and got my Daily. I love it. Only had two problems, I tried to load epub and PDF books from the local library and found I cannot do that. What a bummer, when I try to load them both the machine locks up and will not let me read anything. Talked to Sony support and they tell me this is a no no. Only other thing it seems so heavy but I am learning to just change hands and it works out great. I love this machine. You would think though that both formats could be used on the machine. Oh well maybe in the furture they will have a fix for that. I do have one question, I miss having a clock. Is there anyway to add one? Thanks again for all your help. Vicki |
