You can't buy new books for the nook while overseas. I live in Russia, and have tried. If you use a VPN service it might work, to trick B&N into thinking that you are in America.
With Amazon, you can purchase outside of the U.S. for an extra $2 per book. However, it can work that you go in and set your Geographical location to the U.S. and it won't charge the extra fee. I've done that with free books and it has worked when purchasing from the website, not directly on the Kindle. If you buy them on the Kindle while out of the country, I think you will have to pay the $2 "roaming" charge. But there are other websites that you can purchase from to get books when overseas, although they don't generally have the selection that either one of them has. But I think most of the ones I use you could side-load onto the nook. |

If not she'll need a reader with wifi (and access to a hotspot) or 3G to buy and download books. Addendum: Even 3G will be useless if she's going to be in the middle of nowhere. I suspect most major cities in SA have coverage but the boonies wouldn't. When I was in Peru and Ecuador there was coverage in Lima, Cuzco, Quito and Guayaquil, but not in Iquitos, San Cristobal or any of the rural places we went to. -Marcy Last edited by Marcy; 07-05-2010 at 05:41 PM. |

Kindle has support for over 100 countries. That might be an option, but I am not sure how many countries in South America are supported.

At launch, Kindle 2i was supported in these countries:
http://blogkindle.com/2009/10/intern...e-of-kindle-2/ Things have changed since, usually for the better. (canada is now supported, more or less. ![]() If you know the specific country, there is a link to check for support at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B0015T963C |

To me the priorities - in no particular order - are screen size, portability, compatibility (formats that can be read), screen quality, connectivity. Features are important, and so too is versatility, though I don't want the basic function of the device to be compromised. The overall quality of the device is important, as is price. I am not going to pay say, USD$200 for a device that does not meet my needs so well as one that costs USD$250. The adage from my time in quality management that "quality doesn't cost, it pays" always rings true. I'm slowly getting my act into gear, and learning more and more. One that has caught my eye is the Boox 60, but I also am concerned about manufacturer support. I love the idea of wireless connectivity, but my experiences with my phone are such that a USB cable connection is easier and quicker. Sorry there's no specific advice or short answer from me - your daughter's needs may well be different to mine, and not to forget being in a new country, there may well be sights to see, places to go... she may even give her camera more use than the ereader. Good luck, |

Info about Kindle in Argentina from Amazon...
Quote:
Even if she's in a non 3G area and has access to a computer Kindle might be easiest for her because all you have to do is download your file and copy it over using USB. She wouldn't need to install any software like Adobe Digital Editions and then authorize whatever computer she's using to get books onto her device like most of the ePub based devices would require. Nook wouldn't require that either, but AFAIK you have to jump through some hoops to make purchases from B&N when not in the US. Of course if she's bringing a computer with her she wouldn't have to worry about installing Adobe Digital Editions and authorizing once there as you/she could get that all set up before she leaves. One thing to consider that most readers (but not Kindle without some work) will allow the download of eBooks from the library if your local library offers it. Even if it doesn't for $15 you can get her a non-resident card from the Philadelphia Free Library (unless you happen to live there then it's free) and she can get some of her books from there. This does require Adobe Digital Editions, but if that's not an issue it can be a nice extra to have. Will this reader be for reading fiction or??? |
